PORTLAND'S NEW
.. Confidence was being expreaued
tbli morning: by members of the Or
- egon delsKation at the national cap
ital and W. D. B. Dodson, executive
eeretary of the Chamber of Com
merce, that the full shipping; pro-
: rram desired by Portland will be
realized, according to messages re
'' ceived today by the chamber.
Dodson, members of the Oregon dele
ration and officers of the shipping
board, including Admiral Benson, the
, new chairman of the board, were In con
" ference Wednesday evening; at Wash
ington. No indication has been made
ct how many "hips will be assigned or
'how soon the different services desired
- will be recognized, but the delegation
' is confident that results will be ob-
: tained. x
Several requests for steamer alloca

, the local owned and operated Columbia-
Pacific Shipping com pas y. Other lines
have been proposed by this and other

Uon to begin their activities.
Dodson has been in Washington
nearly two months. It was originally
' Intended that he should be there but a
short time, but soon after his arrival,
the drop in the foreign xchange and
other developments caused a sudden
shift of the trade center to the Pacific
coast. The decision of the shipping
board to shift a large amount of ton
nage to the west coast resulted in local
companies booming active in allocation
demands, pod son has been working on
' these demands and will likely be kept in
the East several more weeks.
