accidents, only six men are left to watch
speeders and suburban violators. In ad
dition to the three accident men, Lewis
says he need IS motorcycle officers,
eight more semaphore men during the
Jay and five more for niRht work.
Lewis has made a careful study of the
Aowntown traffic situation. Judging
from personal investigation and the ac
cident reports, he believes semaphore of
ficers are needed during the dayon the
following corners In addition to the eight
now being served: Broadway and Al
der, Fifth and Alder, Broadway and
8tark, Sixth and Stark, Fifth and Stark.
Broadway and Gllsan. During the rush
hours at night. Lewis says he needs ex
tra men to cover front and Madison,
First and Madison, Second and Morrison,
Larrabce and Broadway and Union and
Broadway. The five men who he wants
to work the above crossings during the
rush hours would be transferred to the
West Side about 7 o'clock. In time to
handle the evening theatre crowds.
WOULD ADO HO COST
Lewis says they are needed at Broad
way and Washington, Bro&dwax. and
Morrison, Fifth and Washington, Fifth
and Morrison and Third and Morrison.
The addition of these extra men will
not add any additional cost to the city,
Lewis said, pointing to figures from
January t to August 1 of last year. At
tha time there were eight motorcycle
men detailed to this relief. During the
six months they arrested zass persons,

has figured that the original cost of the
machines, their upkeep tor eacn monin.
salaries of the riders and a sergeant
amounted to 12.853. This would leave
a hnlanrfl nf 12894.
"In figuring this I have not taken any
time out for men laid up by accident or
detailed to war work," Lewis said,
"which would really cut us to an average
of fiver riders working each month."
