Operating Features

Checking up operation and making a
general Inspection tour of the Southern
Pacific lines In Oregon, K. L. Burck
halter, newly appointed assistant gen
eral manarer of the Northern division
of the Southern Pacific, arrived in
Portland, Tuesday.
. This is the first visit of Burckhalter
since the. roads were returned to pri
vate ownership. He will make a trip
over the Tillamook and Marshfleld
branches before returning to San Fran
cisco. Because the roads are still in a
period of transition, definite plans for
the Northern district office have not
been completed, according to a state
ment by Burckhalter.

Summer Homesites
Surveyed on Shores
Of Mountain Lake
Twenty-two summer homesites have
been surveyed on the shore of Elk lake
at the summit of the Cascade moun
tains In the Deschutes national forest,
accessible from Bend and Central Ore
gon. Assistant District Forester C. J.
Buck announced this morning.
Klk lake is an unusually attractive
mountain lake, being reached from Bend
via Crane Prairie! one of the largest
hlKh mountain pieces of meadow land in
the 'state. The road has been extended
up Snow creek to Lava lakes and Elk
lake, within a mile of the summit of the
Cascades, directly west of Bachelor
Butte and Horse mountain. The lake
is noted for its fishing and scenic at
traction, it Is only a short distance
from the proposed Skyline road which Is
being 'discussed as following the moun
tain chain through the state.
The lake Is ,'OdO feet In elevation and
of volcanic origin.
The forest service expects to send
man .over the region in an airplane to
get an Impresnloii of the summit before
laying out further plans for development
of the lake.
J. W. McBride, a Spokane mining
engineer, has placed before the Port
of Portland, tne commission of pub
lic docks and the Chamber of Com
merce a proposal for the development I
of a coal mine about 25 miles from
Chehalls, Wash., as a means of se
curing a large supply of low-priced
coal for Portland.
- McBride Is one of the owners of
the mine and represents the majority.
According to statements placed by
McBride before the, public bodies, test
tunnels indicate the presence of more
than 250,000,000 tons of bituminous or
near-bituminous coal underlying a
property of approximately 1200 acres.
The coal, he says, can be laid down
In Portland at a cost basis of $3 a
ton. The coal can be used for steam
ing and coking as well as for other
Industrial and domestic purposes. Judg
ing by test samples which the mining J
engineer has exhibited.' it is nis Deuei

on Puget Sound. He also believes that
coke derived from the coal could be I

have been extended to within a com
paratively short distance. The freight
rate from the region would be less
than to Puget Sound cities.
McBride has also brought the de
posit to the attention of the ports of
Astoria and Vancouver.
So far as could be learned this
morning, steps toward expert examina
tion of the mine have yet to be taken
by the port commission, the dock com
mission or the Chamber of Commerce.

with the Reed faculty for lunch he saw

dered for Professor Charles McKlnley
of the Reed politics department a month
before It had gone to press.
McElveen'a remarks about Reed were
uttered to prove the progressiveness of
the Christian ministry which, he claimed,
surpasses even that of educational Institutions.
