Reed Graduate Honored Helen Doyle,
graduate of Heed college with the class
of 1919, has been appointed secretary

presidents becoming assistants in, the
office, her presence, withe Elsa Gill, who
Is registrar, and Calista Kllot. who is

office helpers who formerly held exec

tion. Rabbi and Doctor to Speak Dr. Cal
vin S. White and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise
will le the speakers Monday evening,
March 15, at thus meeting, of the Albina
Citizens league In the Albina branch

White was a major at Camp Lewis dur
ing the' period of the war and is em

Beed Vesper Service Vesper service

clude special music by student talent
and a sermon by Major Thornton A.
Mills, formerly morale officer with the
spruce division. Major Mills has been
a frequent speaker at Reed and his pres

a good autitence. Miss Nana Seely of

Woodmen Initiate Ten Multnomah
camp. Woodmen of the World, Friday
night Initiated a class of ten and re
ceived 25 applications. Important re

old-time, minstrel show. A one-act play
was given after the ceremonies.

land center. Enna has been living in
the Far East for over nine years, and Is
at present a resident of Portland.

Accused of Having Bnralar Tools
Fred Sllva. and Frank Ward, arrested
several days ago by the police and de
tained for Investigation, will be tried
Monday In municipal court on a charge
of having burglar tools lh their pos
session. The two were arrested after
the police received information that one
was carrying a gun.
Food Honse Proprietor Arrested W.
I. Swank, 203 Washington street, was
arrested Saturday upon complaint of the
health bureau and charged with con
ducting a food establishment without
first securing the proper license. The
complaint is signed by J. B1. Nye. Trial
will, be Monday in the municipal court.

Two Motorists Fined for Speeding
Only two motorists had the mjsfortune
Saturday to receive penalties in the

McAfee will be "trail-blazer" for the
college-university team, as the speakers
are called, speaking- on the Christian
ministry 1 at Monday's chapel ' service.
Tuesday morning a special student con
vocation has been called to hear the
message of the church workers who
are addressing all the important insti
tutions on the Pacific coast .Tuesday
afternoon special interviews will be ar
ranged with students desiring to enter
specific Christian vocations, and in the
evening a stereopticon lecture will be
given In the college chapel.
Wednesday sectional meetings will be
held, two of the speakers meeting the
men, and two the women of Reed, with
a view to encouraging further prepara
tion for lives of Christian service. The
various lines of activities pointed out by
the traveling church men Include for
eign missionary work, and -Virtually
every profession and trade at. home.
Their insistence Is upon conformity to
the doctrines of Christianity. Orpha
Phelps is arranging interviews with
women. Maurice Howard, interviews
with men, and Howard Hopklrk, presi
dent of the Reed religious affairs com
mittee. Is general student chairman of
the proposed visit.

Republican Ticket

dacy for the nomination for the office
of county clerk of Multnomah county

In making his announcement Jones
says : "That if chosen as the Republican
candidate and subsequently elected he
will administer the -affairs of th office
in an efficient and business-like man
ner. Insisting on uniform -courtesy In
the treatment of the public and with
that measure of economy consistent with
good service."
Jones came to Portland in 1900 from
Duluth. Minn., and was employed by
the Shlller Cigar company until 1905
and was quite active In the early labor
movement here. From 1905 to 1910 he
was In the service of the "150,000 Club
and the Home Industry League" of Spo
kane, Wash., as secretary-manager of
'and the Home Industry .league" of Spo
kane Chamber M Commerce 'Beturntng
to PortUnd m 1911. upon the reorgantaa
tiort of the publio employment bureau,
hi was appointed assistant by George I
Baker, city commissioner, and later ap
poinied director.
Daring the war, Jones was appointed
by the federal government to assist
Richard W. Montague tn the settlement
of y labor disputes arising in the ship
yards of Oregon and parts of Washing
ton. And upon Montague's resignation
was appointed staff assistant on in
dustrial relations, having charge of the
Oregon district for the emergency fleet
corporation Indudustrial natters.
