ladies of the Central Presbyterian church

The Dixie quartet rendered a
number of songs and selections and was
encored at each appearance. Its per
sonnel is Ella Hoberg Tripp, soprano ;
Jessie H. Hammond, contralto; Gilbert
H Charters, tenor; Earl FL Abbett,
baritone ; Miss H. Haehlen, accompan
ist. Rev. W. IL Nugent the new pastor
of the Central Presbyterian churcka. and
formerly a resident of Newberryport,
lMas., made a few remarks. The fea
ture of the evening was a presentation
cf the proposed consolidation of city and
county by City Commissioner A. L.

Slash Hew Trail to Larch Summit
The Trails club will slash its new trail
to the summit of Larch mountain Sun
day, over the route previously surveyed.
Members of the club and of others outdoor
associations invited to join the undertak
ing will meet at Union station with axes
and braeh hooks at 7:30 a. m. Sunday
to go to Bridal Veil. At a meeting gf

day Senator McNary' bill providing for
the preservation of Larch-mountain tim
ber was unanimously indorsed and 'tele

Sent to Jail for Boom Bobbery Leo
Carroll, arrested by Inspectors La. Salle
and Schulptua on a charge of larceny,
was sentenced to 10 days in the city Jail
by Judge Roasman Thursday. Carroll
was alleged to tfavs taken 8100 in War
Savings SUmps and other valuables
from a room in a lodging house operated
by Mrs. William Howell at 188 Sixteenth
street north. The trial of OUle Davis,
colored porter, charged with the theft of
butter and eggs from the American Ex
press company, was set over until today,

ing; college won the championship for
SoQthern Idaho in Its Inter-collegiate de
bate last week between the College of
Idaho and the Idaho Technical institute
at Pocatello. The team was composed
of Ray Sanders of Gooding, Ray Nllson
of Wendell and Hugh Walburn of Je

the employers of labor are justified in
insisting upon the open shop."
Dr. Cash Speak at Man's Resort
Dr. H. T. Cash of East Side Baptist
church will be the speaker at the Men's
Resort service Sunday at 4 p. m. The

Sentenced for Vagrancy Willard O.
Patton. 408 Everett street, was sentenced
to 120 days In the city jail-Thursday by
Judge Roseraan on a charge of vagrancy.
Sergeant Oelsner. Patrolmen Finn, Pratt
and Greene who made the arrest, tes
tified they found a hypodermic outfit in
Patton's possession.
Child Hurt la Fall From Streetcar S.
Hoyten, 4 years old, 208 West Richmond
street, fell while trying to board a street
car Thursday afternoon. He was taken
to St. Vincents hoepita.1. whence It is re
ported he -received bad cuts about the
face and an injured nose.
Two Arrested oa Saspleioa Frank
Ward and Fred SHva were arrested at
Third and Burnslde streets Thursday.
A collection of burglar tools was found
in their posse salon, according to the
police. They are being held for inves
tigation. On Fire Narrowly Averted An oil
truck at the Union Oil company being
filled by Ray Marks Thursday night
caught fire from faulty Ignition, en
dangering a large quantity of oil which
had Just been put In the truck and a
large ground tank containing several
thousand gallons if - oiL Marks saw
the danger as soon aa the tire narea
up in the engine, and, running the ma
chine to a safe distance, put out the
flames with a fire-extinguisher.
Mrs. Campbell Lectures - Birds
Mrs. Mamie Campbell will give sa Illus
trated lecture on birds before the Ore
gon Audubon society Saturday night at
8 o'clock in Library halL Her subject
will be "Birds at Nesting Time." Some
special slides of nests and eggs will be

FOREST OFFICERS AND
FISH
COMMISSION
COOPERAMCOMPACT
A cooperative agreement is being
framed between the United States for
est service and the Washington state
fish and game commission, .whereby the
forest officers are to be made assistant
game wardens and assist in transporting
and rearing trout fry within the na
tional forests, and the game commission
personnel, including state and county
officers, is to assist the forest service in
the prevention and control of fires.
R. L. Fromme. district forest; inspec
tor of recreation and game, arrived
from Olympia today to perfect the
agreement, which reflects public senti
ment for game protection and ajamo pro
duction by the state sportsmen's asso
ciation organized two years ago.
Fromme is also attending a fire' tres
pass conference at the forest service
today, at which T. T. Trumbull is ap
pealing the case of the Puget Sound
Mill Sc. Lumber company at Port An
geles, which was accused of permitting
a fire which was burning in their log
ging slashing last summer to spread
onto the Olympic national forest. The
fire burned over approximately 1000
acres, mostly In commercial timber. The
logging company is objecting to the dam
ages placed on the timber by the forest
examiner, maintaining that while it was
their tftre they spent a large sum of
money trying" to keep It out of the for
