    SITES ARE LAUDED
BY HOMESTEADER
That James C o n v 1 11. either
through Umorance or wilfulness,"
made gross misstatements in his
criticism of the (tovernment's offer
of Oregon & California grant lands
to, ex-service men to the American
Legion. Is the assertion of Straud
W, Long, who homesteaded for
even years - and proved up on a
farm 18 miles northeast of Eugene
In 19074 '
"I am ithorouRhly familiar with most
of the land open for entry under the
O. A C. land grants." said Long.; "The
soil Is fertile and productive of the fin
est kind of orchards and garden bto
duce. There is not a ranch, part of
which is not suited for far-mini?. It Is
all excellent for grazing. I have been
over eight of the counties in which the
.land is located.
MADE LIVING ON SIDE
In the seven years I homesteaded I
had not a cent of assistance. I made
my living doing odd jobs, building roads,
bridges, trails, helping farmers in the
valley and building houses. The oppor
tunities for doing extra work are much
'greater now than at that time. An ex-
vervlce man can get Vork picking ap
ples and helping farmen. There Is
abundant game, of which some species
may be' killed at every season of the
' year. lie can raise his own vegetables.
, "Oh my homestead 1 built a house
IS by 20 feet out of cedar logs. I split
the logs myself and, with the assistance
of my dog, dragged them to the cabin
elte and erected the house. I grubbed
out trees and brush for a garden spot
and at the time I proved up I had a
good growing family orchard, loganber
ries, currants, gooseberries, strawber
ries and an abundance of vegetables.
I did all this In spite of the fact that
'I was sick and settled in Oregon for
my health. Camp Creek valley, at the
head of which my ranch is located, has
been compared by some to the Garden
Of Eden.
O. A C. LAND HOMESTEADED
"My homestead was no better in
Quality than the -land being offered to
the soldiers today. I filed on govern
ment land. This is O. & C. land. One
consists of the odd numbered sections,
the other of the even numbered. The
general Impression that all the good
lands have been taken up in the past
Is entirely erroneous.
"ConvfU's statements are a great In
justice to both Uncle Sam and to the
boys. The soil on even the hilltops is
the best ever for growing apples. I
have grown Spltsenbergs on my home
stead that nothing in the Hood River
valley could excel.
"I have always been loyal to the gov
ernment and I don't like to see it stung
or the boys stung through statements
made by an Illy informed person."
