Th anniversary of George Wash
ington's birth will have a double
significance In the churches of Port
land this year. From the life of
the "father of his country" the
rler'ry will draw lessons to be pre
sented to the fathers and sons of
today, who are expected to attend
their respective churches cn masse.
Hunday Is "father and Son Sunday"
and also Washington's birthday.
During the past week banquets have
been held by many churches for fathers
and gone. The week of activity will cul
minate with the special Sunday service.

son banquet. A father who does not

boys attended this banquet. Professor

Dr. John Tallmadge Bergen, pastor of
the First Presbyterian church of Minne
apolis, who Is making a Pacific coast va

ing the temporary absence of Dr. Howard
Agnew Johnston. Dr. Bergen is a mem
ber of the Sons of the Revolution and
for some years has been a chaplain of
that organisation. Dr. Bergen was sta
tioned at Vancouver barracks in 1918,
holding the rank of first lieutenant in
the army and serving as chaplain by
special assignment to the Northwest
spruce division.

The church school of missions, which
nas been in session for six weeks, fin-
ished its course at the First Christian
church last Sunday night. This week the
regular schedule will be resumed with
I young people's meeting at 6 :30 and
preaching at 7 :4o p. m. Rev. IL H.
Griffis will give a patriotic address on
George Washington In the evening. In
the morning he will carry out the inter
church plan and preach on Christian
stewardship.
A campaign for new members is being
put on by the East Side Christian church.
The movement is called, "Each One Win
One Campaign." and is part of the na
tional movement of the denomination.
A special service will be held each
Thursday night during the campaign.
The Rev. R. IL Sawyer has returned
from California and will occupy his pul
pit Sunday.

the direction of the Oregon Sunday
School association. This conference will
be especially for girls between the ages
of 15 and 21, and particularly those who
