Socialist league, of which he was
. secretary, how to avoid disruption
by the authorities during the war,
according to evidence Introduced
at the Socialist trial before the New
York assembly. Among the instruc
tions were:

' "Our headquarters telephone wires are
being tapped and we may be treated
like the Socialist in Russia at any time.
; "Train three persons for every office
in your society so that if one is arrested
":another can carry on the work. Let one
of the three be a girl, so that if all our
young men are arrested the girls can
carry on the unions.
"It your society Is disrupted get the
members together and organize some art
or music or athletic club, so that you
can gather without suspicion.
Don't read these instructions to your
full membership, the fewer who know
the plans the safer the plans will be."
Beck Imbibed Too
: Freely and Played
; Police Too Often
John Beck was an adventurous Im
biber. Hs visited Burnslde street Thursday
right, according to his story, and
warned a number of men standing; about
that they should immediately seek work.
Otherwise, he cautioned, he would ar
rest them. The only trouble was that
Beck wasn't a policeman and never had
. been.
Having squelched unemployment. Beck
sauntered into a soft drink establish
ment at 11 :45 p. m. and demanded that
It close at once. Arrest was awaiting
the man who dared question his au
thority, he declared.
Then he met a pair of real patrolmen.
They gathered him In and today he
. was fined $10 and sentenced to serve
three days in jail.

of Harrleburg. have brought suit
against George J. Wilhelm, Robert K.
Burton and Cecil O. Wilhelm, officials
of the bank, asking that a receiver be
appointed, the affairs of the bank
wound up and the assets distributed.
It Is claimed that the majority stock
holders, who are also heavy stockholders
of the First National bank, are oper
ating the bank at a loss in order to
prevent another bank from obtaining
a charter.
The Linn county chapter of the Amer
ican Red Cross has employed Miss
Charlotte Walker, a trained nurse, who
will serve the county under the aus
pices of the Red Cross. Miss Walker
was a social service worker In New
York city and was overseas during the
war.
Jack Howard may lose a leg as the
result of an Injury Thursday morning.
Howard, a mechanic, was lying on his
back under a car when it was hit by a
delivery auto. His leg was caught be
tween the end of the spring and the
front of one of the cars and the blunt
spring was forced through the flesh
above the knee until the bone was bared.
Franklin High Park
Proposal to Be Put
Up to City Council
Franklin High School Community club
members propose to convince the park
board and the city commission that a
portion of the public park funds should
be spent in purchase of a 10 acre wood
ed tract adjoining the high school
campus on the west.
Mrs. George G. Root, president of the
Franklin Parent-Teacher association,
presided last night at a community
meeting In the high school, and Mrs.
L. E. Burdick was named chairman
of a committee to present the matter at
the resrular meeting of the city council
next Wednesday.
E. C. Gilmer. S. F. Ball and Mr. Bur
dick stressed the importance of prompt
action on the playground project, point
ing out that the site Is most conven
iently located for thousands of residents
In the southeastern part of the city.
Police Arrest Two
Declared by police to be joint owners
of a still found at 231 East Sixth atreet.
Chris Carlson and John Haley were
arrested Thursday night. Carlson is a
city fireman. Three jars of corn mash
were seized besides the still, it was said.
Peddler Is Arrested
Walter Spruance was arrested today
while peddling cheap tableware, repre
senting it to be silver. Detectives said
be claims to have found the tableware
in an abandoned house.

"We are going to try to concentrate
on completing our telephone line con
struction necessary to fire protective
work,"- said Merritt, "and the rest of
the money is to be devoted principally
to camo ground improvement work and
to provide better '.tousing accommoda
tions for our employes.
"We are making especially liberal ap
propriations on every forest for trail
maintenance and cleaning out the old
trails. C
"One of me most important trail
projects, from a recreational standpoint,
is that running from Foley springs to
Horse lake, which will be complete next
year. It will start from the McKenzie

the women of Lebanon and vicinity, the
Woman's Civic club has arranged for a
two days' extension school course, Feb

agent, a community meeting here.
Demonstration lectures will be given
by speakers from O. A. C. on dress
making and home cookery.

Mra Selena E. Warner has brought
suit against G. E. Warner for divorce,

Bailey Speaks at Reed College

of Cornell university; make it impossi
ble for him to fill his announced speak
ing engagement at Lincoln high school
Monday night before the Portland
Floral society. His only address will
be at Reed college Monday at 11 a. m.,
