The municipal paving- plant will han dle th greater part of the paving out lined for the present year, according to Commissioner Barbur, In charge of the public works department, and R. 8. Dulin, In charge of the paving plant. i Authorisation for the purchasing agent to advertise and receive proposals for furnishing the largest amount of asphal tic cement', approximately 1006 tons, was granted by the city council Wednes day. Arrangements will be made which will allow the city to receive the ma terial In quantities of 300 tons at a time. f Barbur states he has completed ar rangements with - various banks for financing the work outlined. This will al low' benefited property owners to pay (or the work on time payments. Barbur points out that such an arrangement will remove the main objection to the city doing the work that of making prop erty owners pay cash. Numerous petitions are before the city at present asking for pavements to be laid. Barbur and Dulin are uncertain whether the municipal plant can handle all the work that has been placed be fore It. Barbur states that the plant will prove its worth to the taxpayers more than ever this yfear in the saving on paving work. MAY CONSIDER CLAIM The Auditorium Contractors Ask Arbi tration Board to Decide Loss. W. . Duniway, acting for J. F. Kelly and N. A. Shannon, bondsmen for Hans Pedereon, contractor for The Auditor ium, has asked the city council to refer the claim of $76,000 against the city to a board of arbitration. The claim is for funds that the bondsmen state are due them for losses sustained by the con tractor in erecting the building. Duniway stated that provisions of the contract between the city and Pederson specify that all differences arising from the construction of the building should be submitted to a board of arbitration. No counter opinion as to the text of the contract was given by city officials Tuesday, owing to the absence of City Attorney La Roche, who Is attending; the legislature. It was pointed out. how ever, some months ago by opinion from the city attorney's office that no stipu lation entered the contract that provided for arbitration of differences after the completion of the building. They fur ther stated that arbitration was provided for only in disputes arising between the contractor and architect during the course of construction of The Auditor ium. Mayor Baker and city commissioners at an informal meeting last Thursday said they believed the city would be set ting too dangerous a precedent in pay ing the claim recommended by the spe cial committee of business men. Mayor Baker asserted Wednesday that he would present in writing before the council within a few days his opinion in detail on the matter. Sewer Ordered by Council Remonstrances entered by small prop erty own'ers in the vicinity of Killings worth avenue and Eighteenth street against the construction of a sewer in the district were overruled Wednesday by the city council with the adoption of an ordinance authorizing the improvement. W. here have been relieved from Cuty until the date of trial, January 26. No additional veniremen will be used unless the pres ent Jury list becomes exhausted. Many Montesano people will open their homes to provide lodging for the many wit nesses and others connected with trial. Dr. White Resigns His Albany Pulpit Albany, Or., Jan. 15. Dr. W. P. White, for 19 years pastor of the United Pres byterian church of Albany, has notifed the board of trustees that his resigna tion would be handed In shortly, as he has accepted an appointment as regional director of the Moody Bible Institute. He will continue to occupy the- local pulpit ontll the church has had an op portunity of securing a successor. Dillon to take the place left vacant by Ivan B. Rhodes promotion to the position of state sec retary for Ohio. Dillon has already taken charge of the state office, which is in the main building of the Portland association. He was given promotions In France until he became a director of one of the six regions of the "Y," serv ing on the Lorraine, Chateau-Thierry and Argonne fronts. He was wounded at Fere en Tardenois when his head quarters was blown up by the Germans. He was completely buried in the debris and when taken out was found to have sustained a broken arm and numerous bruises. Dillon later worked with Amer ican soldiers in Trier, Germany. Ivanhoe Lodge of Knights of Pythias Holds Installation A large attendance of members and visitors witnessed the Installation of of ficers Tuesday night by Ivanhoe lodge, K. of P., in its new quarters on the fifth floor of the Pythian building, for merly the Masonic temple. Twelve 'Red' Oases Ordered Dismissed The cases of 18 men arrested by the police and federal officers in the na tional "Red" raid about two weeks ago were brought before Municipal Judge RossiTKin Wednesday by Deputy Dis trict Attorney Deich.
