REED AND HIS VICIOUS
v
Says Senator Was Unjust in At
tacking Japanese and Treaty in
His Speech Made Here.-
"U Is an amazing thing to me that
James Reed, a senator of the United
States, should go so far as to transgress
: the responsibility and dignity of his of
fice to come to Portland and make a
. wanton attack on one of our allies In the
recent war."
With this statement. William D.
Wheelwright, president of the Pacific
Export Lumber company, opened his
reply to Senator Reed on .the Japanese
question at the members' forum of the
Chamber of Commerce Monday noon.
Senator Reed verbally flayed the Japan
ese, the League of Nations and Presl-
, dent Wilson in a speech at the chamber
last Monday.
. Calling attention to the fact that Reed
had used the expression that Washing
ton, Lincoln and Roosevelt were the
greatest - men In American history.
Wheelwright used, to a major extent,
quotations from Roosevelt op the Jap
anese question.
Roosevelt was credited with saying In
1611 that the time had come for us to
show a trust and confidence In Japan
and that there are. certain agitators In
the senate, the . newspaper world and
private life who have played Germany's
game to arouse a hostile feeling between
America and Japan.
Wheelwright further quoted Roosevelt
to the effect that there are certain, dema
gogic agitators in America who are will
ing to earn German money to provoke
ill feeling.
Pointing out "discrepancies and un
truths" In Reed's forum address. Wheel
wright Intertwined his entire discourse
With a plea that every true American
make an earnest effort to realize the
dream America ha'd upon entering the
world war "to recreate the world to a
peace that passeth understanding."
At the conclusion of his address.
Reed's various arguments against the
League of Nations and the Shantung
clause were picked to pieces by Wheel
wright one by one ending with the state
ment that "Japan has never violated a
national agreement"
Army Blankets Are
Transformed Into
Fancy Overcoats!
Why worry with $75 overcoats? Here's
the latest New York fad and It has
possibilities of Portland adoption :
Press a (rents, ever ready to enter the
public prints, bought army blankets
and had a tailor make them Into over
coats. The coats can be dyed, have
novelty, and are low In cost.
While olive drab blankets are not
available at the government retail
store. Fifth and Pine streets, grey blan
kets can be purchased and later dyed.
They range in price from $3 to $8.
Prune Stock Shown
As Good Investment;
Price Advance Big
' Did, you invest in prunes two months
ago? You've doubled your money if you
did.
Prunes that eold at the government
retail store for 11 cents a short while
.ago are now quoted at 23 cents.
"But they are still a good buy." ad
vises B. A. M. Fowler, superintendent of
the store.
Depleted stocks have curtailed sales
volumes, but tomatoes, candy, under
wear, blankets, wagons and harness still
prove big attractions. The store, which
is at Fifth and Pine streets, is selling
. surplus war stocks direct to the public.
