. "Quicken the sympathy of hearts made
dull by reports and sights of suffering
j Incomprehensible and. needless.
IfOULD BT7KT MALICE
. "Call ua again that we may bow before
the eternal laws of creation, putting
aside malice, envy, covetousness and
brutality, to enter Into the peace of the
sons of the Most High.
"Hasten by thy gracious providence
and by the consecrated efforts of thy
children the coming of thy worldwide

: shall rule the hearts And hands of men.
"Create In us, O Lord, clean hearts,

ANT more people 'must be brought into fellowship with the
Jrl church and learn its gospel of brotherly kindliness during
j JK I the coming year, if the determination of Portland's clergy,
' "and active laity is carried out. The coming year must mean
more than the years that have passed. Church workers feel as though
the church has too long failed to take advantage of the golden oppor
tunities offered it. But the war awakened the church as a whole. It
was responsible to a great extent for the tremendous drives of the various
denominations, which have brought new visions and new hopes into the
programs of the coming 12 months.
The church as a whole now sees the
need of the world. It realises the need
for less flowery talk and more definite
action. That the appeal of the mission
station hassbeen heard la exemplified
by the manner in which the various
financial drives of the churches suc
ceeded. The denominations now have
their finances guaranteed,, so they have
set forth on the remainder of their
tremendous task. Sections of Portland
which have long been neglected and for
gotten will see community centers.
Children are to be taken off the street
and placed in a safe playground, where
kind hearted instructors will teach them
the principles of fairness to their fel
lowmen by showing them the right and
fair way to play games. Wholesome
reading matter will also be provided,
from which the child can enrich his
mind and gain the proper knowledge of
life, both its trials and-joys. The work
will not stop in Portland, but will be
carried on In many communities
throughout the state.
OUTLINE PROGRAMS
4n preparation for the great things
of the coming year. Portland's clergymen
will preach New Tear sermons on Sun
day. Many pastors will stress more
regular attendance at the services of the
church. In order that the laity might
keep in constant touch with Its problems
and thereby grow into a spirit where
the ..necessity of cooperation will be
realised.
Dr. William A. Waldo will preach
New Tear sermons morning and evening
at the white Temple. In the morning
he will give a resume of the work ac
complished during 1919, during which
time more than 200 members have been
added to the church. The finances arfe
also in good shape, the church being
free from debt. The Sunday school
under the direction of Floyd Smith is
also reported thriving. The school over
subscribed its pledge of $500 to the
Armenian relief cause. As New Tear's
comes on the regular prayer meeting
night, the service will be changed to
Wednesday night and a watch night
service will be conducted from 8 to 12
o'clock. Refreshments will be served.
