Oonanraera should be able to purchase
fresh meats at lower prices in the retail
shops at this time because there has
bean a general Recline .in wholesale
prices In all lines.
Owing to the heavy stocks of veals
and hogs that have come forward from
the country recently to the Front atreet
trade, there have been unusually . severe
cuts in the price received for this stock.
For instance dressed bogs of best quality
Have dropped J to 4c a pound recently in
the wholesale trade and this should by
all means be passed on to the consumer.
Veals have dropped 3 te 4e a pound
likewise and consumers should get the
benefit of this decline.
With all these drops in the price of
hogs tirtTe has, been' no change noted re
cently in the price of pickled pork prod
ucts but It is assumed that sooner or
later packers will give consumers some
of the benefits of these lower buying
values.

By Jessph P. Prttonerd.
Chicago, Dec. K. (L N. 8.) There wars

corn were 4 He for December, SH for January.
2H S4e for May and 38Hc for July. Oats
were 1 H 2c lower, with December showing tb
greatest loss. . Long in the various nog prod
ucts accepted lower prices.
Chicago, Dec. 27. (I. N. 8.) At the open
ing today com -wss HlUc lower than yei
terdsy's close. Buying was fairly general in a
email way. The decline ran the market into
stop-lorn selling which added to the weakness.
Oats showed a decline of S to H. There
was general commission house selling and poor
support. On the break leading longs were mod
erate ssllers.
Proviaions were practically unchanged and

Betterment in Quality Here.
That the recent freese, which de
stroyed a very large per cent of the
Pacific Northwest potato crop, is in re
ality a. blessing in disguise ia now ac
knowledged by some of the trade. The
loss of a very large per cent of the
seed holdings of farmers, while a ca
lamity to many, will in- reality prove to
be a good thing generally because it
will force growers to secure seed else
where.
Oregon has been known far snd wide ss s
section where the beet potatoes in the countre
ran bs produced. During recent years the
quality of the potato croir-of the state has been
deteriorating .and. today, instead of the product
of this state commanding too highest prices
along the coast, the general run of atock sell
lewsat.
This i due) entirely to the fact thst Oregon
Potato grower hare been extremely lax about
aecnrlng proper aeed for planUng. Many of
them hare not changed their seed In 20 years,
In the big producing sections of CaHfornisj as
wel' a in Washington, the seed is changed oc
casionally and this results in a better average
quality crop.
Soma of the local trade is figuring on ss
curing aeed stork in Minnesota or Wisconsin,
but o far as known, no purchases hare ss yet
been made.

Only thres loada of livestock came to
North Portland for the week's closing
and there was little activity shown in
any line. In fact the general situation
was weaker."
About 'two loads of hogs came forward for
the Saturday trade at North Portland. This
division bwed a few buyers in sight but they
were generally of bearish disposition with
tendency to buy for lower prices. No early sales
whatever wars mad in this division.
