ate an official committee on treaty
compromise, In spite of an appeal by
Underwood to net the Christmas spirit
prevail, Lodge refused to permit con
sideration of Underwood's resolution for
appointment by Vice-President Marshall
of a eonaUlatloli committee of 10,
Underwood made bis appeal suddenly,
soon after Senator Knox, Pennsylvania,
had presented to the senate a favorable
report from the foreign relations com.
mittee on his resolution declaring the
War at an end. Knox -made no effort
to pasg. hie resolution, which was ap
proved earlier in the day by the com
mittee, but asked that it go to the calendar.-
His purpose Is to call It up soon
after the holiday recess. -
