memorable manner.

guests arriving: In the social room were
. greeted with a glow of warmth from the
fireplace and thla was xmly one of the
features that made the House "H" dance
,.. a distinctive evening on' Reed s social
calendar.
The orchestra was stationed in the
center of. the opening between, the two1
..; room and the music was appropriate
to the soft lighting effect gained by the
skillful use of candles, and electric stars.
The House "H" special proved to be
one of Reed's most popular dances with
- repeated encores and exclamations of
delight at the miniature Christmas tree,
which was lighted for this one dance.
The electrics stars overhead twinkled In
response to an electrical device In
vented by Harold Robinson, a House "H"
.' sophomore.
The women of the auxiliary to the
American Legion will sponsor a benefit
dance on the evening of December 26
- to raise funds for the needy boys of the
legion. Patrons and patronesses for the
event will be Mayor and Mrs. George
L. Baker. Major and Mrs. M. B. Mar
cell us. Captain and Mrs. James Oay,
Captain and Mrs. C. L. Johnson, Cap
tain Bert Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. J. C.
. Fanakes, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Couly, Cap

The committee In charge of arrange'
ments for the dance includes Mrs. R.

Announcement is made of the mar
riage of Miss Dorothy Webber Neill to
, Ward Allan Holcomb In Los Angeles,
,- December 10. The bride, who is well
known In Portland, is a nelce of Mrs.

" has been' making her home with her
parents in Lob Angeles for the past two
. ears. Mr. Holcomb was one of the
jarly . volunteers for the service and
spent two years in France, returning
with a commission as first lieutenant.
He Is employed at the Multnomah
Trunk Sc Baggage factory. Mr. and
Mrs. Holcomb will return to Portland
'. after January 1 and make their home

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Porter of Irvlngton
entertained Friday evening with a large

Being Formed

Country club will follow its usual cus
tom of holding open house on January 1
for members of the club : and their
friends. The officers and directors of
the club will receive on this occasion. -
Mixed ; foursomes, land and water
plane flights of the Oregon, Washington
dc Idaho Airplane company will offer
diversion- for members at the club that
day. A buffet supper wilf be served and
dancing will continue throughout the
late afternoon and evening.
Miss Edith Mlhnos will become the
bride of Dr. Blair Holcomb on Christ
mas day at the White Temple. The
service will be read at 4 o'clock by
Dr. William A. Waldo in the presence
of a large assembly of guests.
' Miss Dorothea Koerber has been
chosen as bridesmaid and Roger Hol
comb, brother of the bridegroom, will
be best man. The guests will be shown
to their seats by the Misses Mary Ap
pleby, Bessie Walch and Mary Holmes.
Miss Mihnes has been much enter
tained during the past few weeks. - On
Saturday Miss Dorothea Koerber was
hostess for a delightful luncheon hon
oring 12 of the friends of the bride
elect. The hostess was assisted by
Miss Edna Mlhnos and Mrs. Floyd
Allen.
Dr. Holcomb win take his bride to
Chicago where they will make their
home. ,
. Mrs. Carl Crow is spending a few
days at the Hotel Portland before re
turning to her home in Shanghai. Both
Mr. and Mrs. Crow are gifted writers
and they have a wide circle of friends
in Portland, who are entertaining in

Of interest to Portland society is the
announcement of. the engagement of
Mrs. David C. Lewis to Jordan VZar.

week. Mrs. Lewis is one of the charm
ing young matrons of the city. Mr.
Zan has also a wide circle of friends
in Portland, where he is prominent in
business and social circles. He is vice
president of Zan Brothers and Is a
member of the Arlington, Waverley and
Multnomah clubs. No definite an
nouncement has been made of the wed
ding date.

Portland Thursday evening for San

holidays with Mr. Alvord's parents.
