That such a good showing . In . the
planting should he made in the! face of
the tact that last saaeon's big winter
wheat area was induced hy the necessi
ties of war.v; and ?. that the-eeason for
planting wa ideal, is ' probAbiy due
mostly to the fact that farmers generally
expect' a hlgn , price to continue , for
wheat at kt&st for another year, and
they hare accomplished wonders in the
far of ruch an adverse condition as
th great shortage of farm -.labor.
Perhaps ont Very good reason for the
excellent area planted this season in the
lace or adverse conditions waa that laat
summer there was a greater volume of
ground . prepared for seeding than the
three states have ever known with the
exception of a year ago.

GOTERKHKNT FIGURES OF O REG OX
During the week the figures on winter
wheat production were made public by
the government.
Estimates of the. acreage ana pro
duction of the principal crops of Oregon
by counties for the year 1619 Are pre
sented herewith.' Late In February, 1919,

the Oregon Ieginlatare passed A bill re
quiring the various county Assessors to
collect crep acreage daU for their re
spective counties and rteport , same to
thtt atate tax commiselon. Owing to
the late date of passage of the. law,
many of the assessors had covered a
large portion ' of their : territory 'before
receiving their instruction from the
tax commission, i hence the data ; fur
nished by some ef the Assessors was fat
from complete, and in a-few counties
no . return what ver was mad. Bow
ever. In several counties the assessors,
consider - that - they secured practically
a complete - ennmeration ef th f erop
acreage. In other counties the onseieor
hsva estimated the percentagA of the
total erop. acreage represented by their
returns.. :.':?.'- v. A .vi'."''
With this daU "for 'comparison with
the last census. And with a large num
ber of reports from individual-f Arms,
w believe our. Acreage, figures Are not
f Ar from correct;.; The yield per act-
was estimated from a large -number of
reports from individual, farms, v county
agricultural agents, mill and elevator
operators, and other sources. ' The total
production therefore, while probably les6
accurate than the acreage data, is the
most authentic Information available on
the subject, 8orn rather markd changes
have been made in the earlier estimates,
made while the crops.' Were growing, due
both to ohanges In condition and revised
acreage estimates. Chief among the ro

American Eggs Considered v s
Poor; tack ; off Grajding
Canada' is complaining about the lack
of grading of American egg The fol
lowing editorial from V the Canadian
Form, Toronto, for, October 15, 1919, ex
plains "why . American gs bring lower
prices on th British markets than those
from Any other principal exporting coun
try, except China:
There le no reason why on eggs -with proper
selection and grading should not bring fully as
good prices in Great Britain aa egg from Can
ada. A a matter of fact, ontiUe of egg
bought In th United State ar being exported
by Canada to the mother onntry. .
... "On of the most sncceasful developments in
rceent years in nr trad Abroad that f ens.
Daring th seven months of th jprasent year
Canada'a export trade in eageha equaled in ex
tent th whole of the export trade in fids par
ticular Un in 1918. This Is not do to greatly
increased production of sggs, but to the better
methods in which the business is being handled.
All eggs tor export are graded and standardised
by government experts, so that th buyer ta
Britain know ynat what no is getting when a
buy Canadian ggv. This Asa lasalled in an ns
precedentod demand for Canadian eggs in th old
land, which is only limited by th jnpptty. It
hat aiven Canada the preferenaa ever American
ear, and areatlv infireased-. osf eauort . timda in
Britain. To such an extenv b this trn that -the
Canadian oonsnmer to a large vextent has to de
pend upon American egg for the home supply.
In fact, with their product losing ground in th
Britinh market owang to the snperior nalrty at
Canadian graded ogga, th Americans ar seeking
in outlet for their surplus in Canada. Or tn
thr words, dealer In Canada ottering to the
home trad hav bad to buy in th, American
market. The roan? of this is that a sirs quan
tity of Americas egg ar coming tn that are not
standardised and ar sold as th Canadian prod
net. In the interest of th Canadian ocnmmst
steps should b taken to v , this Amartea
prodnet graded befora. being- placed upon th
Canadian market. It is not fair to th hem
consumer that Canadian eggs should be graded
and shipped ant of th aountry sad their plao
taken by an ungraded Atnerioan supply."? if .
