LAST MEETING OF

BOARD FQRTHEYEAR
President Van Duzer of Chamber

Prophecy for Coming-Year...
The sunset trail across the broad
Pacific, leads to the realisation of
Portland' dream ' of commercial
greatoeaa. They development of the
Orient la the task awarded to the
enterprising men of - the western
coast i for the coming; year. The
merchant fleets) that carry the prod
ucts of American Industrial centers
to life myriad populations of China,
India and Japan will return untold
wealth to the cities of Oregon, Wash
ingrton and California. '
All this, and' much mors than this.
glowed in the message delivered to the
members of the Portland Realty board
at their Friday noon meeting oy Presi
dent E E VanDuser of the Chamber
of Commerce! This was the last meet
ing of the board for the currant 7 ear
and the subject of VanDuzer's address
was "Business Conditions for 1M0.M
CO0PEKATI07 OF IKTEItESTS ,
Appealing to the realty men for
eonvtlnuanoe of ths splendid cooperation
of civto and commercial organisations
which has won success for their efforts
during the past year, the speaker pointed
the way to a till greater achievement
In the future. Foundations for the
Greater Portland are being laid on broad
Jlnea. he said, and embrace the develop
ment of dormant port facilities offered
by the Columbia and Willamette rivers
from Astoria to the heads of navigation.
World demand for the food products,
minerals, lumber and manufactured
goods of the Northwest will require the
establishment of an immense carrying
trade.. VanDuser called attention to
steamship lines already secured from
Portland to New York. Great Britain
and the Orient and announced plans,
now forming, for the establishment of
municipally owned ship Unas.
rORTTAWD BUST PORT
In the matter of equipment, conven
ience and terminal railroad facilities,
Portland is the most important port on
the Pacific coast. VanDuser stated, and
this fact is being recognized in an in
creasing degree by Eastern shippers. The
location of many new manufacturing en
terprises ra this city during the past year
is the result of a careful study of local
conditions and Is a recognition of su
perior advantages offered by Portland
In comparison with other coast cities.
In shipments by rail Oregon Industry
handles doubls the number, of ears re
quired by California trade, according to
the speaker. Oregon possesses a larger
volume of standing timber than any
other state in the Union and the lumber
industry, now the chief commercial as
set 6f the state, Is only In the beginning
of its development.
ISDUSTBIAL SITES OITEBEB
The importance .of - furnishing In
dustrial sites at a low cost to manufac

emphasised, and at the close of the ad
dress Cos A. McKenns, chairman of the
Industrial Development committee of
the Associated Civic clubs, tendered the
services of his committee ta the Cham
ber of Commerce In securing acreage
for mill aad factory sites.
Tourist trade was not overlooked ss a
