descended upon Portland -Thursday
With the arrival of Imperial Poten
tate Freeland and other official no
bele of the Ancient Arabic order,
Nobles of the Mystic Bhrlne, broke
Thursday night into pleasant clouds
Of Joy for nearly 600 Shrlners who
made Portland an oasis of life
throughout that day.

started a tour at 11 a, m.

Returning from the highway late this
afternoon the Shrine visitors will be
guests at a formal banquet at the Mult
nomah hotel. At 11 :20 p. m. the visitors
will depart for San Francisco.
Notable, not only for the fraternal
personages It brought to the city, but
for its salutary effect upon interest in
the great national Shrine convention to
be held in Portland next spring, the
visit of Potentate Kendrlck was made
a holiday of festival delight for Shrine
flora.' Accompanied by Mrs. Kendrick. as
well aa by 21 la Lewis Garretson. deputy
Imperial potentate of Aflfi temple, Ta
coma, and Imperial Treasurer Brown
of Pittsburg, Pa., the Shrine party ar
rived in Portland Thursday morning.
A busy !ay, featured by a street pa
geant which proved itself both splendid
and ludicrous, was marked by a preten
tious three-ring circus at the Armory in
the afternoon, where a large class of
Shrine neophltes toughened their tender
feet upon the heated sands of the Shrine
Sahara.
PLEASURE IS UNALLOYED
That It was a gala evening and an
even more gala night, visiting Shriners
testified their appreciation to Al Kader
temple of Portland.
Among the Portland members of the
class of candidates initiated Thursday
night were Governor Ben W. Olcott ana
Bishop Walter Taylor Sumner of the
Episcopal church, both of whom found
delight in their vigorous reception at

Shrtaere at The Auditorium. The serv
ice followed the presentation to Poten
tate Kendrlck of a great bear robe and
the gift of Indian blankets to other
visiting Shrine officials.
"I am happily looking forward to the
1920 convention of the Shrine in Port
land." Kendrlck said today. "The en
tertainment offered here Thursday and
that planned for today Indicates what
we may expect at the great conclave.
I feel that we may well predict one of
the biggest of all Shrine conventions."
