VETERAN OFFERS
HIMSELF AND GUN
TO RESERVE CAUSE
Old Soldier, Armed With. Spring
fiejd Rifle, Presents Himself
at Liberty Temple in City.
ENLISTMENTS MOUNTING UP
Centralia I. W. W. Tragedy Has
Been Indirect Reason for
Increase in Enlistments.
Carrying an old Springfield rifle
of the vintage of '61, and wearing a
decoration received in the Civil war;
a O. A. R. veteran appeared at the
headquarters of tha American Le
gion in the Liberty Temple several
days ago, requesting the privilege of
enrolling in the civilian reserve,
which is being organized to combat
all anti-government forces, radical
ism and I. W. W.'ism.
Many G. A. R. veterans have expressed
- a desire to be the first to be called In
case of any emergency, but this was the
first old Boldier to come under arms.
r Tremendous impetus was given the '
movement by the recent armistice day
alroclty in Centralia.
ESXISTMEXT ARE GAIITIlfG
The daily average for the past week
has approximated 300, and prospects are
excellent for a fine enrollment next
week. Total enrollment to date ap
proximates 4800, with every indication
that the 5000 mark will be passed before
the week is over.
Over 600 men are now working for
the civilian reserve enrollment. Build
ings throughout the city are being can
vassed and over 400 business houses and
private Individuals have secured cards
for Increasing the enrollment.
Canadian veterans have come through
100 per cent. At a meeting Monday they
Indorsed the idea, and all present signed
up. Cards were taken for absent mem
bers and a follow up campaign , will be
:onducted to secure their enrollment
One member of the American Legion,
who was out of the city, wired to the
headquarters of the Portland post, re
questing -them to enroll his name in the
reserve.
VANCOUVER PLA?f8 RESERVE
Attracted by the success of the move
ment in Portland, a committee headed
by T. Li. Hendrlcksen and J. L. Suther
land, from Vancouver, Wash., called at
the Llbery temple to get data concern
ing the civilian reserve. Vancouver is
contemplating a similar organisation.
At the annual convention of the Ore
gon State Bar association, recently held
in Portland, resolutions were adopted
indorsing the civilian reserve and com
mending the principles for which it
stands. Their indorsement read as fol
lows :
"Resolved, That the Oregon State Bar
association and its members vigorously
t Indorse the civilian reserve, its organisa
tion, purpose and policies, and aligns
itself, with law and order and con-
' stltuted novernment and 100 per cent
Americanism.
ASSISTANCE IS PLEDGED
"Resolved further. That the Oregon
Bar association and the members there
of make this pledge to assist the taw
Inforclne officers in the prompt and ef
ficient carrying out of the principles of
the Declaration of Independence and the
crganlc and statutory law of the nation
al and local government."
C. Y. Tengwald of the Medford post
of the American Tegion called at the
Liberty temple for data concerning the
reserve.
The Medford post '..as been consider
ing a similar organisation and wishes
t- keep the movement unuorm.

Seattle Man Feels as Strong as
He Did at Fifty Since Tak
ing Tanlac.
it v
"My Health baa f&n so sestored by
Taulac I feel as weir and strong at 67
as I did at 50," said J. Brown, of 9406
Rainier Valley avenue, Seattle, recently.
"My rheumatism and kidney trouble are
gone entirely," he continued.
"For the past three years I had suf
fered so much from rneumatlsm and kid
ney trouble without being able to obtain
any relief that I had about concluded I
would never be my old self again. I had
no appetite and what 1 did manage to
force down soured on my stomach and
caused such a tightness in my chest and
?ramps in my stomach I could hardly
breathe. I had such bad dizzy spells
that when I closed my eyes everything
seemed to jump in front of them. My
liver was sluggish and my head ached
so it was almost more than anybody
could stand. My kidneys were in such
bad shape I had pains in the small of
my back nearly all the time, and would
' have to get up four or five times every
night. My arms and shoulders would
throb with rheumatism until they al
most drove me wild. Between the head
aches, rheumatism and kidney trouble
I could sleep only a little at a time, and
often spent half the night walking the
floor in torment. I tried everything any
body suggested, but nothing gave me
any relief at all, and I got in such bad
condition it was very hard At me to
do my work.
"I read In the papers about Tanlac
and I can't help but say it was the most
profitable reading I ever did in my life.
I owe my health to it I have taken 1J
bottles of Tanlac and feel like a new
man. I have a fine appetite and enjoy
every bite I eat, and I don't know what
headache, disslness and stomach trouble
aire any more. My rheumatism and kid
ney trouble are entirely gone and I sleep
o good. I hate to get up In the morning.
And I feet so strong I don't have the
least bit of trouble doing my work now.
"Tanlac is the best medicine I ever
saw, and it Is a genuine pleasure to give
it an unqualified indorsement."
Tanlac Is" sold In Portland by The Owl
