CAREFUL PREPARATION MADE Dr. Howarth, Executive Secretary for. New Movement in North west, Has Headquarters Here. The Methodist Episcopal church has another great program under way. Following the centenary move ment for the raising of $105,000,000, which wan successful, this church has launched what is called the cen tenary conservation program. It is In reality a great evangelistic move ment. The slogan is "A Minimum of One Million Converts for Christ." ThiH is poKKlhly the most colossal movement of Its kind in history. It is a world-wide am;iuign and will reach Into the foreign fields, as well as the homeland. In which the Methodists are operating and for which careful prepar ation Is being made. ( Dr. A. I. Howarth is the executive secretary of this movement for the Northwest with headquarters in Port land. He began his work in the West as pastor of the Methodist Kpiscopal church in Joseph, Or., 12 years ago. He was connected with the educational Jubilee movement which secured $35. 000.000 for the colleges and universities of his church. Last year he served as associate secretary for the centenary in this area. . GOOD WORKERS SELECTED Associated with the executive secre tary for this work are Dr. Charles A. Bowen, secretary of spiritual resources, which includes evangelism, intercession and life service; Dr. John Seeor. , until recently pastor of the Methodist -church at Olympia, Wash., secretary of lay activities, particularly the unit system, minute men and evangelistic teams ; Dr. H. C. Burkholder in charge of finance; the conservation of the centenary sub scriptions. These men are actively en gaged in carrying this program down to the last chiirch in the area. A minute men's evangelistic team made up of laymen under the leadership of Charles W. Miller, has been organized In Portland for aggressive work. This team will visit Methodist churches in the city for the purpose of Increasing inter est in evangelism. Fine results are ex pected from this movement among the laymen. CONSERVATION PROGRAM The conservation program has four main objectives: 1, a spirituality awak ened churc i ; 2, the winning of at least . 1,000.000 souls for Christ by June, 1920 3, in every community the reaching of every person for whom Methodism is responsible ; 4. every non-resident mem ber located and notice sent to the pastor where the member resides. Dr. Rawson to Speak Dr. Rawson, noted English' scientist, will be In Portland from December H to 16, according to an announcement made by the Rev. H. Edward Mills of the Realization league. Thousands of intercessors are being enrolled and thousands are enlisting as tithers. One hundred thousand conver sions and additions to this regiment of the Lord's army in the quadrennium ahead, and millions of money placed on the altag for the maintenance and enlargement of God's cause is the imme diate goal. Eventually this will mean four new buildings for growing -congregations in Portland, and possibly the organization of two more congregations in needy parts of this great city. Mil lions of pieces of high grade printed American Religious Influence Is Topic The Japanese government recently sen', a special commission to the United States to study the influence of Chris tianity on the lives of the American people. Their report to their govern ment was that "while education, com merce and industry have been developed to a wonderful degree, there Is little evidence that the Christian religion is regarded as important by most of the people." Dr. Joshua Stansfield. at the First Methodist Episcopal church, on Sunday morning, will inquire into and discuss the question whether this Japanese esti mate of the Influence of religion on our life is correct. A growing Sunday evening congre gation will listen, as a climax to "Win My Chum" week, to three laymen of the church, who will be heard on the subject. "Life Service." They are E. T. Gruwell, R. J. Minister and Wife To Be Mine Hosts Immediateely following the Sunday morning service the parlors of the East Side Christian church will be utilized by the Rev. and Mrs. R. H. Sawyer in entertaining at dinner the officers of the church, their families and more than 100 invited guests. Two weeks ago a similar dinner and reception was ten dered to 75 officers and members. Dur ing the afternoon the guests were taken in 15 automobiles for a three-hour tour among the homes of the membership. The Rev. Mr. Sawyer is now entering upon his fourth year in Portland. Dr. Waldo Departs For Boston Session Thursday Dr. William A. Waldo, pas tor of the White Temple, left for Bos ton to attend the annual meeting of the board of managers of American BaDtist foreign missions. Dr. Waldo was elected a member of the board a the last national convention. This is the first time a western man has ben elected to this office. Captain Berton F. FALL PROGRAMS ARE ANNOUNCED Fall Rally of Intermediates to Be Held Friday; Seniors Plaji Seven Conferences. Senior and intermediate Christian Endeavor workers in the county are announcing a full fall program. Fri day night the intermediates will hold their fall rally at the First Presby terian church. The theme of the rally is "Consecration." President Vernon Duncan will preside. Short talks will be given by "society presidents on the quiet hour movement. The main address will be given by Dr. W. T. McEIveen. This will be the first rally held under the direction of the new officers. The senior Endeavorers have an nounced a series of seven group confer ences to be conducted in various parts of the city. They will be held on Sun day evenings from 5 to 6 p. m. PORTLAND'S SHARE LARGE City Church Extension Society Contracts for Needed Improve ments on Church Buildings. . About January 1, 19 20. the first annual division of $125,000,000 be ing gathered In the Methodist churches of the United States over a period of five years' subscription under the centenary drive, will be distributed. The askings for the home missionary work are already before the committee on distribution at Philadelphia. Portland's share of these funds will amount, to thou sands of dollars annually for tho next five years. . Already the City Church Extension society of the Methodist church in Port land is contracting for neednd Improve- v ments and properties. They have en tered Into contracts and already have possession of dwellings for parsonages for Patton church, Ients church, Lincoln church and Clinton Kelly church. They have authorized Improvements on Ep worth church to the extent of $1000, which are now going forward. They have assisted In building the church at Garden Home and purchased two addi tional plots of ground there, one for lawn purposes and the other for parson age purposes. They will soon build & parsonage there, If the plana carry on. Other extensive improvements are in contemplation In several churches, among them Montavilla church, Centra! church, Sunnyside church. Centenary church, Rose City Park church and others. Other extensive Improvements are to be made throughout the wholo state.
