brought gladness to the hearts of
millions of people in all parts of the

Portland's churches. Many Port
land pastors will observe Armistice
day with special services. Soldiers,
sailors and marines will be guests of
honor in the various congregations.
The American Legion and Civilian re
serve will also receive favorable men
tion from several pulpits. Dr. W. T.
McElveen of the Iirst Congregational
church, will devote the entire evening
service to the legion. Kobert S. Gill will
outline the program of the American
Legion, after which the pastor will
wreak.

church recently received a letter from
the executive secretary of the Seamen's J
Church institute asking for observance
of Bailors' Sunday, which has been the
second Sunday in November. "The sec
ond Sunday in November has been
known for several years as Sailors'
day," the letter reads. "This year the
day should have special significance."
At First Methodist church, Sunday
evening returned soldier boys from this
church whose names appear In the honor
roll and who have been represented by
stars in the service flag, will be seated
on the platform with the pastor and
will have a prominent place in the serv
ices. Patriotic and national music will
be sung. The pastor will deliver a stir
ring nddres8 commemorating the day.
At the morning services the Red Cross
drivi will be featured.

. Armistice Sunday at the First Chris
tian church will be observed at the
morning preaching period at 11 o'clock.
The t-ddress for the occasion will be a
study In world tendencies by the Rev.
Harold II. Griffis.
Sunday night St. David's Kpiscopal
church will hold a special pervice In
commemoration of the signing of the
armistice. Lieutenant Robert S. Gill
Will make an address, after which
the rector. Rev. Mr. Jenkins, will
discuss the religious obligations of Amer
icans. After the services a social hour
will be spent in the Parish house. At
7 :30 a. m., soldiers and sailors of the
parish will make their communion to
gether as a thanksgiving for a safe
return home.

church, in charge of the Rev. Edward
Constant. The address of the evening
will be given by Mayor Baker.
TO LOWER SERVICE FLAG
A feature of the morning service at
Vernon Presbyterian church will be the
lowering of the service flag. The Rev.
Bruce J. Giffen has Invited all soldier
and sailor friends of the church to come
and take part in this service.
A patriotic program for the returned
service men will be given Sunday eve
ning at Glencoe Baptist church when the
ervicn flag will be lowered. Thirteen
members of the church and 10 mem
bers of the Sunday school responded to
thei,- country's call. The program will
include special music by the choir, and
an address on Americanism by the pas
tor. The Rev. E. E. Flint of Atkinson Me
morial Congregational church has turned
his Sunday evening service over to Cap
tain Franklyn Korrell of the Sixty-third
infantry, who will discuss the Civilian
Reserve and the American Legion.
Members of the Warren Vesper class
of the First Presbyterian church have
arrer.gemonts under way to celebrate
the anniversary of Armistice day, Tues
day evening, November 11, in room E of
the church house. The memorable scene
of that day will be enacted in a real
istic manner, with full representation
of the important official power that
called a halt on the enemy guns. The
Red Cross and Salvation Army will be
in possession of the food supply for
the evening.
Special services commemorating the
signing of the armistice will be held
Sunday at 3 and 8 p. m. at the First
Spiritualist Science church.

Dr. William A. Waldo and the promo
tion board of the First Baptist church
have arranged a coirse of study for
the church, to continue for at least five
weeks. Two simultaneous classes will
be held at 6 o'clock each Sunday evening
and four classes Thursday evenings.
The classes begin this week, and are
as fallows :
Thursday, 7 p. m.. "Kvangelism," by
Captain B. F. Branson ; "Christian
Leadership," by Dr. O. C. Wright;
"Christian Americanization," by Mrs.
O. P. M. Jamison, and "Prophecy." by
Mrs. J. B. Murphy. Sunday. 6 p. m.,
"The Conduct of Life by Attorney A.
L. Veaxie ; "Christian Stewardship," by
Floyd R. Smith. To accommodate those
who wish to go direct from business
to church, supper will be served at 6 :30
Thursday evenings. Dr. Waldo will

Bishop Sumner to
Preach at Service
The services at St. Stephens pro
cathedral will be held as usual on Sun
day. Bishop W. T. Sumner. swho has
inst returned from the general conven-
tion, will preach at the 11 o'clock serv
ice. The hymn of "Sacrifice." sung by
the combined choirs of the churches in
Detroit, will be sung by the choir on
Sunday morning just before, the sermon.
This will be the first time the" hymn
has been used in the West. The Bishop
hopes to have enough copies made in
the near future so that all the churches
In the diocese will be able to use it.
Survey Planned for
Mt. Tabor District
A platform meeting in the interest of
every department of the church will be
held Sunday night at Mt. Tabor Meth
odist Episcopal church. Preparations
for a survey of the Mt. Tabor district
will be made, the object being to in
crease church attendance. George
Israelson, membership secretary, will di
rect the movement. The Epworth league
will observe "Win My Chum" week with
special meetings in the church at 7 :30
o'clock on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday evenings.
Sermon for the Deaf
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock the Rev.
J. A. C. Beyer will preach for the deaf
in Trinity Lutheran church, Graham and
Williams avenues. His sermon subject
is "How and Why to Search the Scrip
tures." All deaf are invited to attend.

ter of religious activity for the
Pacific Northwest, just as It is
commercially. Realizing the central lo
cation, of the city, chief executive of
ficers of various denominations have
established branch offices here. A few
of the offices have been here for some
time, but recently several more have
been added to the list.
The Baptist headquarters is at 403
405 Tillford building. Here is located
the offices of Dr. O. C. Wright, executive
secretary of the Oregon Baptist con
vention, and Dr. A. M. Petty, joint sec
retary of the Pacific division of home
and foreign missions. The literature
committee and promotion board oC the
denomination also direct their work in
Oregon through these offices.
The Most Reverend Alexander Chris
tie, Archbishop of Oregon City, directs
his work from the Cathedral residence,
62 Sixteenth street north. The province
over which Archbishop Christie has su
pervision Includes Oregon. Washington.
Idaho, Montana and Alaska. Portland
is also the headquarters for the arch
diocese of Oregon City.
The Oregon Christian Missionary con
vention recently opened offices at 608
Panama building. Two state officers di
rect their work from this center: The
Rev. C. r . swander, superintendent oi
Christian missions in Oregon and corre-
sponding secretary of the state conven-
tion, and Mrs. Clara G. tsson, state
Sunday School field worker.
The offices of the commute on pub
lication and joint literature distribution
of the Christian Science churches of
Oregon are located at 734-735 Northwest
ern Bank building. A joint reading room j
is also maintained by all city churches
in room 1133 Northwestern Bank build
ing. The Nation-wide Campaign committee
of the Episcopal church has just moved
into its new offices, 401 Yeon building.
From this office will be directed the
great campaign of the Episcopal church.

The men's class of Rose City Park
Presbyterian church has been reorgan
ized, Roscoe P. Hurst being elected
president. The class will spend part of
its time discussing the problems of re
construction in the light of Christian
principles.

The Rev. J. F. Ghormley, for many
years a well known minister of Port
land, is returning with Mrs. Ghormley
this week and will take the work at

Oregon is directed from room 420, Piatt
building. Here are located the Rev. John
Di Rice, supervisor of the rural sur
vey, and the Rev. Ralph McAfee, su
pervisor of the city survey.
The Methodist headquarters are lo
cated in several offices in the Piatt
building. The great Centenary movement
is; directed from room 409, by the ex
ecutive secretaries,, the Rev. Charles A.
Rower, and the Rev. A. L. Howarth.
The Rev. Matthew Simpson Hughes,
bishop of the entire Northwest, also
makes this office his headquarters. On
tle second floor are located the Of-ffic-es
of the Pacific Christian Advocate,
and Its edl'oi. Robert H. Hughes, and
the branch store of the Methodist Book
concern.

Forbes' Pastor to Be
Installed Tuesday
The Rev.. Ward Willis Long, pastor-
elect of the Forbes Presbyterian
church, is to be formally installed in
his new position Tuesday evening -at
7 :S0. The Rev. T. P. Smith of Trinity
Presbyterian church will preside. Dr.
Charles W. Hayes, stated clerk of the
presbytery, will preach the sermon. The
charge to the pastor will be given by
Dr. E. H. Pence of Westminster church,
and the charge to the congregation will
be given by the Rev. Mr. Tate. The
Rev. II. F. Gelvin of Orenco church
