One of Many Cross Highways Is
That Which Will Give Outlet
to "Rich Chehalem Valley.
WOULD JOIN THREE ROUTES
Country Is One Which Is Very
Closely Connected to Earliest
History of This State.
Following the construction of the
tnaln trunk roads by the stata,' the
next stage In road development Is
the building: of cross or connecting
roads b'y the counties. Of the many
cross roads which sugrsest them
selves Is the one which will serve the
rich Chehalem valley, giving it an
outlet with the Capitol highway on
the east and the west side branch of
the Pacific highway on the west. To
accomplish this result, it will be
necessary to build 10 miles of paved
road from Newberg to Yamhill. This
will supplement the proposed paved
road through Marlon county, from
Newberg to the east side Pacific
highway to be built by Marlon
county.
The two roads combined would rive a
cross highway which would connect the
three main highways in the Willamette
valley south of Portland.
The Chehalem valley is one of the
most fertile valleys in Oregon and is a
large producer of fruit and dairy prod
ucts. It Is also one of the historic
spots of the state, being the scene of
the earliest settlement ' by Americana
It was here that in 1834 came a party
from California led by Ewlng Young.
This same Ewlng Young was in a way
responsible for the establishment of civil
government west of the Ilocky moun
tains. YOTJITG LEFT NO WILL
He became the most prosperous Ameri
can settler in Oregon through ,the accu
mulation of many cattle and much land.
He had no family and at his death. In
February, 1811, it Was learned that he
had left no will and so far as known
had no heirs. What to do with his es-
tate. In the absence of any probate laws,
became a question. Immediately after
his funeral the American settlers met
and appointed a committee to frame a
constitution and draft a code of laws.
The office of supreme Judge with pro
bate powers was created and a clerk of
courts and public recorder appointed. A
sheriff was chosen as well as tJtree con
stables. For a code of laws the statutes
of New York were adopted. This, the
first organized movement for civil gov
ernment in Oregon, culminated two years
later In the historic meeting at Cham
poeg when the provisional government
was established.
Attention to the Chehalem highway
has been called this summer by the fact
that owing to construction between
Newberg and Dayton it provides the
best detour between Portland and Mc
Mlnnville. PEOPLE MUCH INTERESTED 1
The present road connects with the
west side highway at Carlton, but It is
; proposed to make the connection at
Yamhill. This will make a slight de
crease In distance and will have the far
ther advantage of eliminating a steep
grade.
The residents of Chehalem valley are
so thoroughly interested in securing an
Improved highway that at a recent meet
ing at West Chehalem they pledged
themselves to cooperate to the extent
of $1000 a mile for a 16-foot hard-, sur
faced road.
The county court of Yamhill county
will be asked to place In this year's
budget an appropriation of $10,000 to aid
the project and also like appropriations
in 1920 and 1921, making a total of $120.

curing of state aid and further donations.

Here Is How to Get to Salem

Commission Lists Best Roads
Salem, Sept. 20. In anticipation,! a
heavy automobile traffic from all sec
tions of the state to Salem during the
State fair next week, and in view of
the great amount of constructive work
in progress on state highways, the state
highway commission today issued a
statement on the condition of roads be
tween Portland and Salem and from
Salem south, with suggestions as to the
best routes to be followed by automo
biles in this territory. The statement
follows :
"The Pacific highway between Port
land arjd Salem is under construction
between Aurora and Salem. It is not
necessary to make any detours between
Portland and Hubbard ; between Hub
bard and Woodburn is a detour over
dirt road of about five miles which
is practically Impassable during wet
weather and is very rough In dry
weather. Between Woodburn and Ger
vals the road is paved and open for
traffic. Between Gervals and Brooks
is a detour which is over earth road
a part of the way and Is impassable
during wet weather, and is very rough
in dry weather. The read -is open be
tween Brooks and Salem.
"The West Side highway ia under con
struction between Newberg and Dayton,
also between West Dayton and McMinn
vtlle. The detours around this work are
over earth roads and are steep and
narrow and very bad In wet weather.
"Traffic between Portland and Salem
should take the west side road to New
berg by wny of Terwilliger boulevard
and the Rex-Tlgard road. Cross the

The Gary coast agency of 71 Broad
way, distributors for the Gary truck,
has Just received six Gary trucks from
the factory, and has turned them over
to the Portland fire department for their
use. The fire bureau placed orders
for the trucks some time ago, but ow
ing to the universal slowness of deliv
ery, the trucks have just been unloaded.
These trucks are now being equipped
with fire-fighting apparatus at the
municipal shop, and ere long will be
able to come tearing up the street to
put out that fire hubby started with
cigar ashes en the dining room car
pet. The trucks are equipped with Bruns
wick cord tires in front and solid tires
In the rear.
The Gary coast agency has had great
success in the distribution of the Gary
truck, and E. N. Cramblett, local man
ager, predicts a healthy movement for
the future.

"The best route between Newberg and
McJifinnville is by way of Carlton,
thence on the road on the west side of
the North Yamhill river to McIinnvne.
This route has been marked with tem
porary road signs.
The best route between McMlnnvllle
and Sheridan has also been marked
with temporary road signs.
"The road between Salem and Dallas
is under construction and 'is almost lnr
passable In wet weather.
"The Pacific highway between Salem
and Albany is under construction and
Is almost impassable in wet weather.
"The best route from Salem scuth 13
by way of Liveslev, East Independence
and Independence to Albany, Corvallis
and points south. This is a fairly good
graveled road the entire distance, but it
is necessary to ferry across the river
at Independence. The ferry operates
from 6 :30 a. m. to S a. m. The charge
for a machine is 85 cents until mid
night and double rate between mid
night and 2 a. m. ,
"Traffic Is advised to follow the route
through Albany, Tangent, Shedd, Hal
Bey, Harrisburg and Junction City, as
the road through Corvallis, Monroe and
Junction City is under construction and
it is necessary to make short detoturs.
"The hair nee of the Pacific highway
will be found under construction at vari
ous points and Bhort detours will be
necessary in some cases which the
traveler will find well marked."

Remove Oil Clog
When the oil pressure on the high
pressure system refuses to come up to
Its maximum amount, generally about
25 pounds, It is probable the ball check
valve is clogged with dirt This can
be removed very quickly with the aid
of a piece of bent wire. The wire hook
should be made from a 3-lfith rod with
a -lnch hook at the end bent at right
angles.

Work on Highway at
Kelso to Begin Soon
Castlerock, Wash.. Sept 20. Active
preparations are under way for work
on the Pacific highway for a distance
of seven miles north of Castlerock. The
contract has been let to Henry & Mo
Fee of Seattle, for $241,817. The local
manager has arrived and leased the
Swift building for a cook house and the
Carner building for the storage of ce
ment and other material. The highway
makes a straight course from the city
limits, which will necessitate an over
head bridge across the railroad tracks.
Employment will be furnished for a
large number of men.
