Can't Keep Out of Game .
Frank L. Stetson, fire chief of Seattle,
Just can't get out of the fire fighting
profession. For 40. years he has been
engaged in fire department work, 30
years of . whlc time he has spent as
chief.- For a long time he was with the
Minneapolis department, which he buut
up from a plunteer to a paid proposi
tion. Then he became seized 'with the
desire to come west so he left fire work
and entered the lumber business. But
about 1908 the lumber industry went to
nieces and Stetson sold out his little
sawmill and entered the real estate busi
ness! selling timber lands. "Then,"
said Stetson, -Seattle wanted someone
to take over its fire department and its
reDresentatives thoueht I was the man
for the place. Wny. they came to my of
fice and simply put me by Tore dock in
fire, work.' I have been banging on ever
since 191L We have built up a good
department In Seattle, and one of the
principal purposes of our conventions
la to n-ive the fire chiefs from the newer
cities a chance to gain ideas from the
older cities of Seattle, Portland and San
Francisco, which have well established
departments. It Is" largely a campaign
of education. People seldom think about
fires until they have them. .Fire fight
ing has become a profession Just as
much as practicing medicine or la,
and the man who enters it should ex
pect to devote his life to Its problems."
Stetson is staying at the Multnomah.
