ROUND-UP

Prospective Visitors Who Decide

Urged to Attend First Days.;
CITY IS MASS OF COLOR
Saturday Crowd Promises to Over- j

History to Open on Thursday.)
Pendleton. Sept. 13. The Pendle
ton Round-Up, the Olympic games
' of the est that once were, la ready
for Its tenth annual presentation,
commencing Thursday, September
. 18. The great stadium, wherein are
shown true replicas of that great
Western- spirit, now kept alive by
sons and grandsons of the pioneers
who opened up the West, awaits 25,
COO and more spectators, who will
come from all parts of the United
States. Pendleton, keeper of West
ern traditions, is ready for its guests.
Its streets, gala with streamers and
pennants, every store window resplend
ent with color and trophies of the by
gone days, every man wearing a beaver
sombrero hat and hundreds of cowboys
and cowgirls in bright attire present the
first picture the eye of the stranger will
nee. The finest horses of the range and
the most resplendent Indians with the
reservation are commingled with the
hospitable populace of Pendleton, await
ing the opening of the big epic drama.
BIGGEST TET OFFERED
The war is over and the Round-Up
. will, In cognizance of that fact, outstrip
any ' of Its nine predecessors. Purses
were increased nearly a third in order
try bring to I'endleton the greatest of
ail the frontier shows' performers.
N'early $10,000 in cash and prizes for the
thrre days are the lure which .will place
before the city's guests an array of
performers never, excelled by previous
Round-Up nor by any other show simi
lar in character.
Each afternoon during the three days
of the show, four strings of the fastest
relay horses ever assembled will compete
for the world's championship and $900 in
cash prizes. The cowboys who compete
In these ruces must ride eicht times
around the track daily, total time to de
termine the winner I jr the three days.
The strings are owned by four of the
most noted (performers in frontierdom,
Kddie McOarty. Charley Trwin, George
Prumheller and W. F. Parsons.
- B LM)0(;(MNti BIG FEATURE
Four cowgirls, also riding relay
strings for thes-e siune cowboy kings, will
compete for a like purse and under al
most identical conditions. Speed' rec
ords are promised, for the horses en
tered are speedier and the oval track Is
smoother and faster than ever.
Steer bulklogging, ; for the . world's
championship and a purse totaiing $750,
furnishes one of the greatest thrills of a
Jifetime. Bulldogging is a battle of
strength between cowboys and young,
active, virile Texas steers. It Is a battle
against time and scientific. Bulldogging
l not. as some people would be led to
believe, a detriment to the animals.
Rather the danger lies with the cow
'aoy. A great array of cowboys will try
their hand at this event.
Steer roping, an event of a range
round-up, is also one - of the feature
events of the arena. Here two brains
are needed, those of the cowboy and
.those of his pony. Steer roping as an
art has attracted contestants from as
far as Oklahoma. This year's purse
.carries $700 and trophies.
INDIANS TO CONTEST
The B00 Umatilla reservation Indians.
who will make camp in their tepees at
Round-Up park, are featured in several
of the 19 different events on the pro
gram. Their ponies as well as their
thoroughbred horses are entered in spe
cial races and the squaws, excellent
horsewomen themselves, perform in a
number of races. The Indians are promi
nent In the grand march, which wend:;
"its way around the big park during the
intermission each afternoon. An added
feature of the Indian camp this year
will be the presence of 44 of the 46 boy
who wore the American uniform during
the world war. One of their number is
serving with the forces in Siberia and
one. John Montana, who was drafted
from the reservation but was not a
native, lost his life in the Argonne.
While the games of the cowboys and
Indians take place in the Round-I.'p
park, the annual Westward Ho parade,
typltal of all that was common In the
early days, will be held as usual on
Saturday along the streets of the city.
XOTHI.N'U MODERN IN PARADE
Stage coaches laden ' with pioneers,
ponies bearing Indians, scouts, cowboys
and cowgirls and plainsmen will wend
their way past throngs of ultra modern
westerners and a fair sprinkling of east
erners. The big procession will be
purely and faithfully pioneer and not a
vestige of modernity will be allowed, ex
cept, perhaps, the music. Five bands
will play for thij parade. 'the Pendle
ton Round-Up band being featured. The
latter are attired as cowboys and ride
horseback as they play.
. Persons-who have decided at the last
moment to cone to the Round-Up are
advised to come for Thursday and Fri
day. as the Indications are that Satur
day's crowd will be far larger than the
capacity of the stands will hold. There
have been 5000 new bleacher seats
erected but the few grandstand seats
reserved for those who did not send in
advance orders are more plentiful for
Thursday than for Saturday. The show
is virtually the same for all three days.
A big staff is working night and day .to
insure that accommodations are fur
nished every visitor.
PENDLETON WELCOME READY
: Every man, woman and child Is a
walking "welcome" sign and all are
ready for the guests who will begin ar
riving early in the week. Pendleton has
f. not forgotten how to play host and is
clearing its throat so it can yip in uni
son: ,lf er buck!"
