PORTLAND, OREGOII works is under way. and petitions call ing for 'more than tS.000.000 worth of work "for next year have been filed with the council.'" It 'la the desire of the peti tioners, that the improvements be con summated 'during the: present building season,1 but the rush o work has made it impossible for the department to launch further projects with any hope of completion before November 1, wn the . construction season closes, worn for which petitions have already oeen filed has therefore been postponed until next season. ! Colonel H. & Graves, chief of the federal forest service. Colonel Graves spoke before the Cham ber of Commerce at luncheon Monday noon and ' addressed local ; lumbermen at a special meeting- called in the sreen room of the chamber at 2, p. m. He urged the cooperation, not only of lum bermen, but of farmers and land owners generally in protecting- future genera tions against a. lumber famine. Millions of acres , of . loggect-off lands in the Northwest and. in other sections of the country are unfit for agricul ture or for gracing land. Colonel Graves stated. ' but could be reforested to ad vantage and 'thus insure a continuance of the lumber -supply. The federal gov ernment through the forest department is planting thousands of acres of land in the forest reserves and asks the cooperation of the various states and private land owners in carrying' on this Important work. , r t .The -lumber markets of this country west for their, supplies and the .import ance of our. forest products is rapidly increasing, owlnj; to . the depletion of timber , supply- in other sections. . Dur ing the next 10 years more than 60 per cent of the timber holdings f of ; ; the Southern pine section will have been consumed, according' to Colonel Graves, and the importance f Southern pine as a factor to the lumber industry have dwindled to a comparatively negli gible position In 20 years, i H ' Already the demands upon the lum bermen of the Northwest are assuming vast , proportions and the area of avail able timber land- is being denuded at a rate which will leave an actual short age in less ' than 100 years unless a definite policy of, reforestation, is im mediately adopted, according to Colonel Graves,.- '-i r -v Fire prevention "la the first Important step to be taken in the work of refor estation, and to make ' prevention ef available at all times to act as fire fighters. " Local lumbermen agreed with Colonel .Graves that reforestation . 'can be successful 1 only where the - young trees are protected from fire, and to insure this . protection it was. proposed at the afternoon meeting that soldiers of the United States army be quartered in the forest reserves to cooperate with forestry officials. ; Colonel Graves proposed that the gov ernment take th lead in fire protection and ' reforestation work and secure the cooperation of state flOcials and tim ber owners..
