'BLUEBEARD' AFFAIR
IS TRUMPED UP, IS
BELIEF IN FRANCE
Landru's 15 'Fiancees' Held Myth
to Divert Attention From
Peace Negotiations.
By Pel Scott Mowrer
Special Cable to Th Journal and The Chicago
" Daily Nm
(Copyright. 191. by Chios go DaCy New Co.)
Paris, France. Juno 20. The Ldberal
.newspaper Oeuvre charges that the sen
. aatlonal Landru or modern "Bluebeard"
- affair of Parla has been largely trumped
up by the covernment with a view to
distracting public opinion from the dila
tor! nets of the peace negotlAtiona. It
aay that there never really has been
sufficient evidence aralnst Landru. who
Is charged with having: murdered about
12 or 16 "fiancees." Oeuvre continues :
"These crimes have been 'Wholly in
vented by the police, who desire to dis
tract public attention from the council
of four. But their efforts have sur
passed all verisimilitude. The idea of
causing the disappearance of IS women
without finding a single one ; the Idea
. of emptying; ponds to discover a pos
sible cadaver ; th Idea of sweeping- chim
neys to reveal incriminating soot and
of the daily theatrical strokes with
which the readers 'have been stunned in
every article has finally disgusted even
. 1 the most easy going. The transportation
strikes put an end to all this. It is In the
streetcars and auto busses that the
people read the morning newspapers.
Being obliged to ' walk they no longer
have the leisure to read this kind of
romance. Those who were painfully
composing this shadowy story have
understood that- their - efforts would
henceforth be In vain, and have ceased
trying to, entertain u with a mythical
being who no longer interests anyone.
This story has been interrupted in the
midst of its manufacture.' .
Coast Track Meet
Program Calls for .
2 Days at Tacoma
According to the official program of
the peace jubilee to be held at Tacoma
from June 30 to July 7, Just received
this morning in ' Portland. - two days
will be consumed In staging the annual
Pacific coast track and field champion
ships In the Tacoma stadium. This is
not in accordance with notifications
sent Manager George W. Philbrook of
the Multnomah Amateur Athletic, club.
When the Pacific Northwest associa
tion events were held recently on Mult
nomah field. Tony Bell, coach of the
Tacoma Athletic club, aspirants told'the
local officials that July 1 would be the
date in Tacoma, but now comes the pro
gram saying that July 1 will find the
preliminaries being run and the finals
on the afternoon of July 2.
Canadian day has been named for
July 1 and starting at 1 o'clock p. m.
will be the grammar achool champion
ships, followed by the Pacific coast con
i tests. Manager Philbrook has made ar
rangements to take his 16 Winged "M"
athletes .to Tacoma next Monday after
noon and return to Portland early
Wednesday morning and he is confident
that but one day will be set aside for
the titles when it is een that there are
not enough entries to call for more
than two or possibly three heats is, any
one race.
The athletes would not have their
strength taxed too much for not even
the national championships require two
days to put across the winners. Man
ager Philbrook telegraphed to Coach
Bell asking for an official ruling on the
date. - -
Carl Johnson, the Spokane flyer, may
not be seen in action at Tacoma during
the championships, the reason being
given out that he figures he has had too
strenuous a season already and that
he is due for a rest during his vacation
between semesters at the University of
Michigan. However, If he feels that he
is In nis best possible condition he may
journey to the coast and represent the
Spokane Athletic club. .

the third annual Pacific Northwest ski
tournament. The " tournament will be
the principal attraction there that day.

to enthusiasts on toboggans and on ski a.
present to take advantage of the oppor
tunity to enjoy winter sports eight days
after the summer of 191$ has been offi
cially ushered in.
The annual tournament is a young in
stitution In the Pacific Northwest. The
first one. in 1917, brought only four en
tries. - That it took well was evidenced
the next year when, in spite of the fact
that America was busy winning the war.
and most of the expert ski runners of
the Northwest were in the service, 17
entered. " This year that number is
going to be far overpassed, and compe

and O. M. Overn, publisher of the Ta
coma Ttdende, is in active charge of ar
rangements. Kntry is open to anyone,
whether a member of the club or not.
