THIRD PARTY IN
IKING
FOR SO
ON RECENTISSUES
Promises New Party Unless Re
publicans Unite in the Fight
Against League of Nations.
SENATOR BORAH "THREATENS
Opponents of World League and
Sponsors, of Government Own
ership May Form Allegiance.
By Juttln McGrath
WAShlnston, June 7. Signs of a
new party alignment in the United
Slates are beginning to multiply. A
third party In the campaign of 1920
is not only a probability, but seems
inevitable. There has not been so
much political unrest in the country
sine, the free silver campaign of
1896. Political unorthodoxy is ap
pearing every day.
In the senate yesterday Senator
Borah threatened his Republican
colleagues with the formation of a
new party in the event that the Re
publican party indorsed the League
of Nations covenant or remained
silent on that Issue.
Tt7MCTI.Tr IS 8COIIED
Senator Reed of Missouri, the leading
Democratic, opponent of the covenant,
took occasion to criticise and condemn
the chairman of the Democratic national
committee and Mr. Tumulty, secretary
to the president, for "committing the
' Democratic party to the League of Na
tions, although tfce treaty has not. yet
been given to the American people."
Senator Reed has not yet said that
'he will desert the Democratic party if
the League of Nations covenant Is rati
fied, but among his colleagues it is
understood that he does .pot Intend to
cease his opposition after the senate's
final action. Re also is believed to be
ready for a third party movement if
it should turn out that the third party
shall prove to be the only way In which
opposition to the favoring of the league
policy in the United States can be made
effective.
rBEST GROWS APACE
Senator Johnson and Poindexter, on
the Republican side, and Gore, Thomas.
Shields and Myers (Montana) on the
Democratic side, also have been so
strongly opposed to the League of Na
tions covenant that it may be difficult
for them to preserve their party alle
Jriance If the campaign of 1920 should
turn" upon that if sue.
Political unrest Is not due solely to
the. League of 'Nations issue. There are
other issues which are luring senators
and congressmen away from their old
..party camp grounds. Principal among
these is the issue of government owner
ship. '
pi AY IjSSJtTES. RAISE D , tJt
Postmaster General Burleson's decision
to return the telegraph lines to private
ownership : Director of Railroads Htnes'
disposition to return the railroads to
their private owners J Chairman Hur
ley's recommendation that the govern
; roent's steel built merchant marine fleet
be sold to private individuals, and Pres
ident Wilson's seeming acquiescence in
alt these plans of his subordinates to
' take from the control of the govern
ment all those public utilities, which
it. was found necessary for the govern
ment to operate during the war. have
caused great dissatisfaction among
those who believe in public ownership
. of public utilities and think that the
. soundness of their convictions on this
subject is proven by. the experience of
.-. the war.
The Republican party, of course, will
v not commit itself to public ownership,
and the Democratic party seems to be
drifting away from it.
SEW TsENDEJfCT SEEX
Therefore those who believe in it must
find some other party medium of ex
pression. A union between some of the
League of Nations opponents and the
. advocates of public ownership is a po
litical possibility. It might prove a for
midable combination. The appeal of
such a combination, f course, would be
to- give the government of the United
States more power, instead of taking
away from it, through the League of
Nations, some of the powers which it
now possesses.
Many of -the senators and leading
politicians with whom I have talked see
a new tendency in American politics.
This new tendency, they say, is to ap
peal for power on the attitude taken on
..live issues rather, than upon traditional
party allegiance.
PARTY TIES LOOSE
- 'Party ties were never looser, and con
victions on living issues never more
boldly expressed.
There is a growing disposition to have
the people make the issues for the party
- organisation, instead of having the par
ty organizations declare to the people
s' what the Issues are to be. If existing
parties shall . prove unresponsive to the
great issues which are agitating the
minds- of the people and refuse to have
Ahe campaign of 1920 made upon those
Issues, then there is hardly a doubt that
there- will be a new party in the field.
Leading politicians here are generally
of that opinion. ' !

AIR FLEET COMING
IN TWO SECTIONS
Flyers Will Leave Mather Field
Monday Morning and Separate
Into Squadrons at Medford.
The air fleet which wUl do . fly in
stunts daily over Portland . during the
Victory Rose i Festival, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday of next week, will
hop off. on the long flight to Portland
next Monday morning, according to a
telegram received Friday by the Rose
Festival association from Lieutenant
Colonel Henry L. Watson; commander
of Mather Field, Sacramento, Cal. The
telegram, couched in technical terms,
gave instructions for having gas and
oil along the way.
Deciphered It states that the fleet
will fly together from Mather Field to
Medford on the morning of June 9.
There it will be divided into two squad
rons, one hopping to Corvallls the aft
ernoon of June 9, and evidently stop
ping there overnight, and hopping to
Lebanon the next morning, June 10,
and thence flying to Portland, so as to
arrive here in the afternoon.
The other fleet will hop from Medford
to Roaeburg the morning of June 9,
thence to Kugene the afternoon of June
9, stopping at Eugene overnight and
flying from there to Salem the next
morning, June 10, thence to Portland,
bo as to arrive here the afternoon of
June 10, at approximately the same
time as the other arrives.
The fleets will land upon the landing
field laid out on the Portland municipal
golf course, Eastmoreland. The field
will be properly marked and all ar
rangements completed today.
The flight to Portland from Mather
Field, which will be one of the biggest
flying stunts so far attempted by the
United States army aviators, due to
the size of the fleet and the mountain
ous country that has to be crossed, was
secured by Herman von BorsteL director
of special features for the Victory Rose
festival.
The landing fields along the route
have been laid out by members of the
Aero Club of Oregon, and Milton R.
Klepper, president, has completed all
arrangements for ras and oil that will
be necessary at tne stops to be made.
Establishment of
Foreign Credits Is
- Urged in Congress
Washington, June 7. fL-'N. S.) Leg
islation to establish foreign credits in
the United States for the protection of
greatly expanded industries was being
agitated in congress today.
"I believe that such legislation Is nec
essary and hope it will be brought up
soon." Senator Smoot of Utah said to-
div. !
Senator Owen of Oklahoma, formerly
chairman of the senate banking and. in
surance committee, at the same time
said that if ' the Republicans did not
act quickly "the blame for any panic
would be with them."
Massacre Leaders
Said to Be Caught
London, June 7. (I. N. S.) Among
66 Turkish prisoners who have been
taken to Port Said are the ministers
responsible for .the Armenian massa
cres, according to a News Agency
dispatch from Malta today.
Clam Diggers Earn
Big Sums in Season
Aberdeen, June 7. From $800 to $1000
each was earned by clam diggers during
the season of three months just closed.
Favorable tides and weather and high
prices were the contributing factors.
Figures Never Lie
In January, 1910. there were in the
United States 2.683 single men insane
and 26,047. married men insane which
shows that the crasy men stay single.
At the same time there were 37,115 sin
gle women insane and 35,975 married
women insane which proves that in
January, .1910, narried life made more
women crasy tnan it did men. . And the
more you study these figures the crazier
