Every report, : local aa well aa national, indi
cate that tha retail business ot that eotustry
in a very prosperous condition, with an active de
tuand for merchandise. ,
The eoasnmer b anxiously awaiting the re
turn af lower prieas, bus a labor has been well
employed at high, wakes and the product of the
farm - have been abundant and sold at extreme
values, the American people are wen able to
buy every ' needful necessity, and also indulge
stain in luxuries if they so desire. ; Now that
the necessity for retrenehtnent is past and the
panicky feeling that caused boarding baa disap
peared, consumption has again become normal
and the public is baa-Mntog to spend money more
freely and leas grudgingly.
Tha retailers are buying very conservatively
and reducing stocks. This la wise if not carried
too far. R tacks should b replenished often,
with a sufficient supply of an staple to meet
the increasing demand Thar is new no exens
for extended credits, and a spot cash or lim
ited credit basis ia a rule that is practically uni
vessel. This enables the dealer to discount his
bills- and to be prepared for any emergency.
The delay and uncertainty of the peace con
ference is reflected in, an unstable market in
soma line that should show strength. A reces
sion of price from present high levels is due
and will oecnr in a normal and natural manner,
accenting to the law, of commerce, rust aa soon
as a "table peace pact is finally ratified and es
tablished. Several lines of ' food products have already
shown a liberal decline, notably beans, canned
milk. Standard corn and tomatoes, but it will
bo some time before values of ' groceries recede
to pre-war prices, if they eve do. Opening
prices wefe named en next, season' pack of pine
apple, and also on asparagus, that were higher
than last year., and the pack ia sold np. Price
being paid in contract for green fruits indicate
high price for all canned fruits and berries the
coming season. Corn and tomatoes will be
cheaper tlian lat year, but yet at least B0 per
cent above the, normal value.
If present, indication for bounteous crops at
high Talus r fully realised, this year should
b a prosperous one, and with tha final estab
lishment of peace the wheels of industry will
begin to hum and our brave soldiers will find
lucrative employment as fast aa they ar re
turned to their homes. ,

To Show Increase
Yakima. April 10. The Utah-Idaho Sugar
company has contracted for 10.000 acres of
beets in Yakima valley this year and expects to
get an average yield of 15 tons to tha acre, ac
cording to Mark Austin, agriculturist for the
company. The price Is $10.00 per ton and the
crop will be worth $1,000,000 to the growers.
Mr. Austin is ber to look over the prospects and
to make a report to tha company on tha ad
visability . of gompleting two other factories,
work on which was abandoned last year, lie is
much pleased with the showing made. Eighty
per cent of the land contracted is . already
planted and on SO per cent of this the beets'
sra already up, tha stand being unusually good.
Thinning will begin on some of the early fields
next week. The indications ar that both fac-!

Tha extreme strength shown in tne egg trade
is surprising even to trices in closest touch with
tha situation. Not only are prevailing prices
about 10c higher than ever before known at
this time of the season, but the market is
firmer at thee figure than daring any previous
storage period.
Begs are today euoted along Front street
around" 44c a dozen to retafiere for current re
ceipts, while f. o. b. buyers are freely offer
ing the country 43e a dozen for similar stock
delivered here in large lots.
So keen is the demand for eggs from storage
with th big eastern packers putting away many
carloads in storage here and on Puget Sound,
that it would not ba at all surprising if vslues
be further lifted within the next few days.
While receipts of eggs her continue to gain,
the demand is still keeping ahead of the of
ferings snd arrival sr sold as soon a they
are received.
Tha selling price of eggs along Front street

Liberal stocks of Pacific coast , wheat ar being
moved to the east and central west by Pacific
Northwest graiu dealers. . Liberal premiums ever
the government set price are still obtainable and
the call for supplies is greater than the trade
Lere can take rare of.
Threats of government interests that huge im
portations of foreign wheat would be brought to
this country to stay the advancing prices in the
United States seemingly have no effect either
upon the price or the demand from tha eastern
trade.
It appears that while tlie price ot wheat in
Australia is seemingly much tower than ik this
country, tha added freight rate and cost of
handling aa well aa the fact that th foreign
wheat is inferipxto the American product, aa
well a tb inability to gat foreign shipment at
all promptly, gives the domestic grain th prefer
ence on every aide.
