Very liberal demand for seed oata far showing
in the Northwest trade at ' thia time, and- be
cause of the scarcity- of offering many groweie
are compelled to purchase tegular feed atock for
planting. ;
Selling price for feed oats ranged around 35
a ton, while from $75 to $80 i baing asked for
seed stock. Not only are seed oata scarce in
thia section, but owing to the huge demand from
Canada the Eastern trade is showing a like con
dition. That the California alfalfa hay coming to
the local market is not only of very poor qual
ity, but that the bales are so large that they
re unsuited . for the general call here, is the
opinion expressed by some of the leading iren
in the trade.
-Good Northwest alfalfa is a scare article
these days," say Harry Spurlock, in charge of
the hay department of Everding 6c Farrell. "It
is almost impossible to secure sufficient stock for
requirements, and while during the . last few
deya there has been a rather fair supply com
ing forward, it eleans . upso quickly that the
demand is by no means filled. .
"This baa been an unusually poor season for'
timothy nay tn the local market. This is prob
ably due to the. fact that automobiles are fa&t
taking the place of horaes in the city, while the
dairy interesta are practically all buying alfalfa.'
A preliminary meeting of the grain feed deal
ers of Portland has been held and a committee
appointed to further tbe organization. : Tbe trade
