Milk Prices Are
Out of Line
Producers Say They Are Too Lows
Public Sys Too High.
By Hymaa H fossa
With recent sharp declines in the price
of feed, the open winter and early
spring, the smaller demand for canned
xnilk and the lower wages being; paid on
the farms, trouble is brewing in several
parts of the country regarding the ex
treme prices in effect for raw milk.
In California a boycott against the
use of milk la pending, and similar ac
tion has started in several Eastern
sections.
Notwithstanding this, tha producers
claim they ara not getting the profits,
and the dealers say they are in a like
position ; in fact, the latter are going
out of business in many instances be
cause of .' the . close competition. Even
the producers who are also acting as
distributors ara finding the sale of milk
a business without a profit, although in
some sections the producers are trying
to expand and take over additional
business.
At New York; a receiver has been ap
pointed for the Cooperative Milk Pro
ducers' Marketing association and the
Country -Milk company.
Both concerns are beaded by Roswell
D. Cooper, president of the Dairymen's
league. Liabilities, it was said, were
approximately 1400,000, due to farmers
in payment for milk, while the principal
assets are said to consist principally of
milk cans. The receiver was appointed
upon application of the Addison Cooper
ative Dairy company.
Those desiring information regarding
markets should write the Market Editor,
inclosing stamp for reply.

Millstuffs are steady at unchanged prices
while the flour trade remains, quiet.
Broomhall cabled: India Official reports
confirm the indicated outturn of wheat on irn
gated land will probably be normal, but on tin
irrigated soil the yield is expected to be much
less. There is little hop that any wheat will
be exported from the coming crop. However,
some moderate quantities of barley are being ex
ported and it ia believed that grain would not be
allowed to leave th coiuntry unless harvest pros
pects wire considered Very fair on the whole
Australia Heavy rains hav fallen over a
fairly wide area. This moisture should give
abundant cattle supply and put the land in food
condition for plowing. Numerous claims are
being mad that wheat growing ia not profitable
at tha nmseat tim and it is announced that the
government ia preparing to help where assistanoe
ia needed.

Continued limited arrivals are shown
market for livestock at North Portland
in the
and in
general the trend of tha trad remain steady to
strong.
Only a small volume of cattle is putting ia
appearance at North Portland and this is th
only branch of the trad that ia not showing
strength. In fact th cattle market at the best
can be called nothing bu (toady aad in many
spota it shows weakness. Th big buyers ara not
seeking stocks and ara willing to allow th
smaller killers to parches all they want. This
is ia itself a sure sign of a not everstrong feeling
in tha trade.

ning figures were about 180,000 bales larger
than expected, but Liverpool and spot house
buying on the call temporarily offset its effect
oil the cotton market today. Old style contracts
opened 22 to 82 points higher, while new style
contracts showed initial gains of 8 to 15 points.
Later, however. Wall street selling and com
miasion'hous pressure drloped, partly on the
ginning figures, and the market eased off. and
at the end of the first 20 minute showed a net
decline of about five points on ' the new crop
months.
The close was very steady on covering, th
old contracts showing an advance of 10 points
to a decline of 48 points, while new contracts
were 2 to 28 points lower.

ABOUT ONE MARRIAGE .
IN EVERY NINE WINDS
UP IN DIVORCE COURT
Oregon Ranks With Highest
Three States in Divorces; Low
est in Marriages.
Waehington, IX C, March 20. About
one marriage in every nine is terminated
by divoree. The number of marriages in
proportion to the population haa in
creased since 1890, but the divorce rata
haa increased much more rapidly. Tha
returns for 191$ show 10C0 marrlaea
and 112 divorces per 109,000 population.
These are soma ef the mare striking fea
tures of a report on marriage and di
vorce covering tha calendar year 1918,
which is boo a to be issued by pirector
Sam L. Rogers of tha bureau f the
census, department of commerce.
According to tha returns, which cov
ered $885 counties out of a total of
2980 no data being available for the 95
missing counties the number - - of
divorces granted ia 1816 waa 112,033 or
112 per 100,000 ef population, aa against
84 in 1906, 73 in 1900 and S3, to 189a
Excluding South Carolina, in which
state all lawa permitting divorce were
repealed in 1$7$. tha lowest thre divorce
rates in 191$ ara shown for the Dis
trict of Columbia, North Carolina and
New York 13, 81 and 12 per 100.000
population, respectively ; while the high
est three rates are those for Nevada,
Montana and Oregon 607, $23 and 255
respectively. In 914 per cent of tha
cases the divorce waa granted to the
husband and in 68.9 per cent to the wife.
The latter percentage comparea with
67.5 for 1906 and 66.5 for 1896..
- The principal causes for divorce and
the percentages contributed by them to
the total were : Desertion, 36.1 per cent ;
cruelty. 28.8 per cent ; infidelity, J1.5 per
cent; neglect to provide, (.7 per cents
drunkenness, 3.4 per cent ; combinations
of preceding causes, 8.6 per cent ; all
other causes, 6.7 per cent. .
. In only 37.7 per cent ef the dlvorca
cases were children reported ; in C2.1 per
cent na children were reported, and in
10.2 per cent the records contained no
data aa to children.
The marriage rate 105 per 10.000 pop
ulation, or. 100 per 100,000 waa a little
more than nine timea as great as tha
divorce rate, 112 per 100,000, and it may
be said, therefore, that if the 1916 rate
were to continue unchanged, about one
marriage in nine would bo terminated
by divorce.
The marriage rates for the various
states show considerable differences.
ranging from 65 per 10,000 In Oregon to
178 in Montana. The highest three
rates 176, 150 and H9 appear for Mon
tana, Maryland and Florida, respec
tively ; and the lowest three 65, 66 and
73 are those for Oregon, North Dakota
and Wisconsin, respectively.
