EXTRA ALLOTMENT
OF BAPTISTS IS
YET TO BE RAISED
Victtrt-y Campaign to Raise $6,
000,000 for Advancement of
Work 'of Missions, Is Project.
ALL MUST BE IN BY MARCH 30
Intention Is to Start New Church
- Year Which Will Begin April
1 With Entirely Clean Slate.
t Twenty-nine Baptist-churches In the
State, 11 ef which are In Portland, have
already raised In cash their apportion
ments In the Victory campaign that
is being waged throughout the nation
by the Northern Baptist convention.
They have yet to raise their extra gift
?llotmenla, which are supposed to come
rom the "more wealthy members. This
announcement was made by Harley K.
liallgren, Btate director of the Victory
'campaign. ;;-r-
The Victory campaign is a drive with
in the Baptist churches of the northern
' states to raise $6,000,000. The drive
dates are March 23 to 30. March 81 the
church' year closes and in order to give
the denomination to. clean slate for the
Xiew "year the members must respond
to the call,.
The victory ' campaign Is : a laymen's
movement. It originated in the mind
of Ambrose Swasey, a prominent lay
man In the church, who wondered why
' the soldiers of Christ and the 'members
of the church couldn't do the same great
things accomplished by the government
and the army during the war. Mr. Swa
sey did not stop with thinking., He
called three leading Baptist laymen to
his summer home and talked Over the
matter with them. They sent out a call
all over the nation and 00 Baptist lay
men met in the East and formed the
Victory campaign.
Sir. Hailgren said : "Had these men
. not opened the way, many of our Bap
tist : missions throughout the vworld
would have had to close this year, or
else the mission board would have faced
- a great deficit. The war imposed upon
ns such great burdens and increased
- the ' expenses ! of the missionaries no i
much that closing seemed to be the
only alternative."
Dr. Alonso M. Petty, who is district
secretary of home and foreign missions
In the Northwest, said recently that Ore
gon is leading all the states in his dis
trict in meeting its apportionment.
Dr. Petty and Rev. F. C. Laalette will
v leave Sunday for the Deschutes region
and Crook eeunty on a tour in the in
terest of the Victory campaign; They
-will discuss the program of the church
to do constructive work in France, Bel
glum, Russia and India.
Dr. W. W. Waldo of the First Baptist
church spoke during the past week at
Corvatfls to a large gathering and Dr.
W. B. Hinson of the Kast Side BapUst
church plans to go to Astoria this week
to conduct a great rally. From now
until the end of the drive laymen and
clergy will tell of the drive from prac
tically every Baptist pulpit In the north
ern states. Theii-motto is: "The love of
Christ constralneth us."
Intensive Program
In Cause of Activity
Dr. Wallace W. Willard will occupy
the First Congregational pulpit Sunday
morning and evening. The church has
inaugurated an intensive program of ac
tivities And a great deal of Interest is
being taken in the general welfare of
the. church. The iMen's Brotherhood has
begun active work under favorable cir
cumstances and the women plan a large
.campaign of church calling besides their
weekly meeting for Red Cross and char
ity sewing. The chureh cordially invites
to Its worship those without affiliation.

Festival of "Lots" One of Most
Popular Among Jewish
Great Days. '
Purfm. the festival of "lots, falls
on March 16 this year. - It is one of
the most popular among the Jewish
great days, ' and deservedly holds first
rank . among merry-making events of
the year. . ...
The history connected with Purim is
that of fair 'Esther and loyal Mordecal,
who defied the mighty king of Persia
to save their people from destruction.
Regardless of the absolute historicity
of the book of Esther, - Purim earns
veneration from both orthodox and re
form Jews for its earnest appeal to hold
faith in a high power and that material
prowess, material grandeur Is to be
sacrificed . and ' forgotten - when one's
friends are in danger. , ;
Nowhere Is the solidarity of the Jew
for, the purpose of bringing God's truths
to . earth so . well Illustrated., as in - the
simple story of Esther, and a serious
moral lies beneath the. Jocular, light
vein that the festival produces.

THIS YEAR WILL

- - -
Date . Is Determined by Phase of
Moon, According to Decision
of Council of Nice.
DAY CONTROLS OTHER FEASTS
Great Church Day Falls Excep
tionally Late This Year; Dates
for Next Five Years Given.
Raster Sunday, the day of days in
Christian churches, will be celebrated
this year on April 10. or five Sundays
from tomorrow; Easter will not fall
at sueh a late date again for five years
Peculiar aa it may seem to the lay
man, action of the moon is the deciding
factor tn fixing Easter Sunday. In ac
cordance with the decree of the Council
of Nice, Easter Sunday is the first Sun
day after the full moon that falls on
the next after March 21, unless this full
moon .happens on a Sunday, then Easter
is celebrated one week later. The dates
of all - movable feasts on the church
calendar depend upon the date of Easter.
Following are the dates of Easter for
the next five years: 1920, April 4; 1921, '
March 27; 1922. April 6 ; 1923, April 1; j
1924, ApM 20; 1925. April 12. i
The latest dateon which Easter has I
been celebrated since the year 1880 was -April
25. This was In 1883. Three times I
since-then Easter has fallen, on April!
23. These years were 1905, 1913 and!
1916. The earliest Easter which has been
celebrated for 40 years back Is March 25,
and this has .occurred only twice during
that time. It was In the years, 1883 and
1894. :- . - ' - -
The widest difference In two years be
tween the dates of Easter within the
last 40 years is 21 days.' This occurred ,
between the years 1888 and 1889 and be
tween -1918 and 1919. In 1888 Easter
was celebrated on April 1 and the fol
lowing year on April 21. Last year
Eastern Sunday was March 81 and this
year it Is April 20.
