Overstaying of
Market Hurts
Average Producer Grows Good Stuff
But Does Not Know When to 8eIL
V By Hymaa H. Cohea
Overstaying-- of the, market appears
to be one of the cardinal faults of
the average producer. Many of the
producers who turn out superior qual
ity stock and understand from A to Z
every branch ' of ; the production of
farm product, will show a gross lack
of business ability -when it comes to
the marketing; of their product-'
It la perhaps human for the producer
to want to secure for himself all that
the market will afford in price for his
products' but a little judgment exer
cized now and then will result in his
securing better average values than
if he blindly decides to sell at jt
certain price.
Generally speaking the producer who
decides to sell product, when the
market reaches a certain quotation, will
decide then that perhaps after all he
should hold ' awhile and therefore
makes up his mind not to sell until
another certain price is reached. When
that value, too, is reached, "he changes
his mind again and decides that maybe
he can secure still higher prices. This
Is all right in itself, but it generally
develops' that he holds too long and
that . prices weaken before he realizes
it. The producer is entitled to every
cent that his product is worth or will
bring, but in many Instances he de
feats himself In securing this extreme
price by not knowing when to sell.
Giving advice to him is like that
much water thrown upon a duck's
back, because no matter how. well' in
formed the elver of the advice is and
no matter how good hl intentions are
regarding the farmer, the latter is sus
picious. Those seeking special information re-
gar-ding markets should write the mar
ket editor, enclosing stamp for reply.

Wool Shearing Has
Started at Yakima
Yakima. March 13.- Sheep shearing ia begin
ning in Yakima valley with promise of an excep
tionally heavy clip. Wool growers are not. how
evter, expecting the high prices that have pre
vailed for the past two years. 4 One 6f the heaviest
of the valley producers waa heard to say thia
week that he would be glad to contract his 1919
clip at 40c per pound. Many received 60c for
their wool last year and for the 1917 clip. Kays
Bros, and Kays & Coleman of Mabton were the
first grower to begin shearing. The, lower val
ley wool grower are paying the union scale of
20 cents a head without protest.

The reaction in the demand for onions
to causing some concern among the trade,
but such action tias been generally ex
pected by those in closest touch with the
market, c ;c, '"' ' '" " ; :
i When there was Intense excItemenV.ln
the trade and all sorts of values were be
ing offered by ' speculative interests, i
many shtpnfents of onions were made
from this state that showed "such poor
quality before being loaded that when
the shipments arrived at their destination-rejections
naturally resulted .
The trade is by no means surprised at
such action, for it is known that much
"Junk" stock was shipped out as No. 1
stock by some of the Independent opera
tors. . '
Present market for onions shows a buying
value at Willamette valley- points of not above
84.00. although, the Confederate association ia
still quoting up to $4.25. but no sales are shown
at the higher price during the last 48 hours.
Private asesMgeg received by the trade here
from the middle west and California indicate
that the market in general baa about all the
onions it can absorb at the moment, and for
that reason no sales can be made except at
lower figures. ,
Not only is this action of the trade expected.
in view of the poor quality seat forward by some
opera ton, bat such reaction of value ia in line
with what usually happens. There is seldom a
market that advance that doe not show mo
ment of weakness and depression, no matter how
strong statistically the market stands.
Statistically the onion market ia very strong.
In fsct it is a Very big question whether over 1 5,
or possibly- 16, carload of No. 1 onion are still
unsold inythe hands of Oregon grower. This is
a mere handful, and if the stock is of good keep
ing quality, there appears little doubt bug that
the situation will improve. . Ia fact, atock in
sight is so limited that a "runaway" market ia
not entirely out of the question.

There were a number of specialties, however,
in which violent advances occurred. Texas Com

heretofore bad been dealt in on the curb market.
These shares which were sold on the curb yester

" That the present condition of the Ida
ho grain crop is' the best for about 10
years, fa the statement made by D. W.
Greenburav formerly grain official of
the Gem state, but now traveling exam
iner of the Day properties in the North
west, Mr. Greenborgr says that until
the -recent snowfall the condition was
serious and fears were expressed be
cause of the lack of rainfall and snow
during the fall and winter months. A
big acreage is reported.
Extreme scarcity of alfalfa hay continues in
the local market, according to report made by
Harry Spurlock. in charge' of the feed department
of Eventing er rsrrell. Uttle stock is being of
fered by the Interior, and holdings here are nom
inal. Other hays are. likewise showing little
movement -to tidewater,- snd the entire trade ia
stiong.
That millers are making a more determined
effort to unload' mill stuffs is indicated by the
gradual shading of values. Sales by the mills are
reported as low as $36.50 a ton at the mill door,
although some are still ssking sa high as $38.00
ton. Wholesalers are offering this stock to con
suming interests around $42 a ton delivered, s
pries that shows them only normal profit when.
crayage and handling charges are considered.
Somewhat more active demand for both rtata
and barley in the local market is indicated. The
former extreme stagnation in oats appears to be
slowly disappearing.
John H. (Jack) Noyes, who recently severed
his connection with the "G4pbe Grain St Milling
company, after several years ' employment as
manager of their Portland office, one year in
charge of tha Seattle office, and in earlier years
in the grain business in San Francisco, has
gone into business and will operate strictly as a
broker, mainly in grain, hay and mill feed, with
offices in the Lewis building.
