FIRE IN DEAD TREE
STARTED ON JUNE 27
WAS BURNING NOV. 8
s
Clinkers Form In Center of Trunk
And Smolder Until Cooled;
Cause of Fires.
Fire started in a dead giant fir
tree four feet in diameter June 27,
1918. was still burning November 8,
although heavy rains had soaked the
forest in September and October, ac
cording to a report from Forest Ranger
John Kirkpatrick of the Rainier na
tional forest, to District Forester
George H. Cecil.
The tree stood near the mouth of
the north fork of the Cispus river, and
when the ranger last saw it, was
still burning, although reduced to a
'stub less than 40 feet high
Fires of this BOrt persist, according
to Ranger Kirkpatrick, because of
clinkers which form and He in the
center of the burning surface, much
the same as those in the bottom oft
a blacksmith's forge- They are like
red hot bricks and a tremendous
amount of rain is necessary to cool
them off.
These clinkers are hard with a glazed
surface. 'They resemble lava rock in
form, being perforated and honey
combed to some extent.
Burning cinders are often carried
considerable distances by the wind,
starting new fires where they lodge.
Thus a fire starting in the dead top
of a tree pay smolder unnoticed until
some of the- cinders drop to the ground,
ignite the duff of the forest floor and
gain considerable headway before dis
covery. The only safe course, ac
cording to forestry officials, is to fell
every smoking snag and completely
extinguish all fire In the woods.
Livestock Industry
Receiving Boost by
Exposition Company
The magnitude of the -work being
undertaken by the Pacific International
Livestock Exposition company is draw
ing country-wide attention according to
O.'M. Plummer, general manager of the
association-
"Late Saturday," said Mr. Plummer1
this morning, "we received a wire from
Frank W. Harding" of Cihcago, manager
of the American Shorthorn association,
telling us that his association had just
appropriated $5000 for our shdw this
year, to be held November 15 to 22. To
this appropriation our association has
added $2500 for breeding classes, in
Shorthorns, $1000 for milking Short
horns, and $300 for other classes, mak
ing a total of $9000 in premiums for
Shorthorns. Similar appropriations are
being given by the Pacific International
exposition for premiums In all a total
of $40,000 has been set aside for pre
miums for the next show."
Mr. Plummer says Vat at a meeting
of the board of directors of the Pacific
International Livestock Exposition com
pany to be held in February a definite
location for the proposed quarter mil
lion dollar show grounds in Portland
will be decided upon. The aasociation
committee on stock and cattle will ask
the state legislature for $25,000 for the
exposition.

Opposed to Eecent'
Increase in Wages
Chicago, Jan. 13. (L N. S.) Chicago
telegraphers are today on record as op
posed to the recent wage Increase
granted telegraph operators by Post
master General Burleson.
J At a meeting Sunday of the Chicago
district council of the Commercial Teleg
raphers' Union of America a resolution
was adopted reciting that the increase is
Inadequate to meet the present cost of
living ; is not in keeping with Presi
dent Wllson"s proclamation establishing
the national war labor board ; is unfair
in that the wire administration fixed the
profits of the stockholders of the com
pany before fixing a fair rate of pay
and thaf it discriminates against the
highly skilled telegraphers.
A copy of the resolution will be sent
to President Wilson.
