Cohea Oregon-Washington cranberry grow ers are missing the opportunity of their lives by not properly advertising .the fact that the use of their berries neces sitates the use of about 40 per cent less sugar than do the -eastern berries There is one big chance that the local people seem to have let slipped and It would be a drawing card for the local product, the value of which could scarcely be estimated. As matters stand there is a good de mand for the local fruits but there is absolutely no reason why it should not take the entire trade and shut the eastern berries entirely out of the Pa clfic coast markets. Another matter which the cranberry people here seem to have slipped up on. They are quoting exactly the same price for berries for delivery at any place along the coast while the usual method Is to quote f. o. b a certain station, Portland, for Instance. Under the present system of quoting the growers are receiving far less money net for their supplies which they ship to dis tant points than they are getting from Portland. Salea alone the wholesale way during the last 24 hours were at 42e a pound generally for No. 1 stock, although one packing company la reported as obtaining 48c generally for Ha offerings. Generally expected that a further advance in th price will be forced during the day. as but little of the home demand bas aa yet been filled. The local trade did itt usual stun? of holding back it purchase until outside markets cam in and grabbed tha cream of tha offerings. There is something about the Portland retail trad that cannot be explained. While outside marketa will purchase turkeys a week or so in advance of tha holidays and take a chance regarding the price, the local trade always waits until th last minute and then if suppnea are scare, higher price must b paid. This is th preaent situation in th local market. While receipts of turkey hare been quite fair, the demand ha been enormous, as ha been fore case in these column for some time past. Dressed ducks are now beginning to arrive, but the market will not be established until later in i the day. Dressed geese are selling around 20e a pound. Very Erratic Tone In Stocks; Quick Changes in Prices New York, Nov. 26. (L N. 8.) A strong belief that there will be a modification in money regulation caused a strong ton at th opening of th stock market today, and In the first 15 min utes there were general advances ranging from fraction to over 2 points. After that period heaviness again developed, wiping out nearly all these advances. Marine oreferred was in brisk demand for a time, advancing 2 H . but quickly reacted. Steel common moted up and reacted. Southern Pacific advanced 1 H to 99 pointa, from which it reacted. Union Pacific was in good demand, and after opining down, advanced. General Motor rdU 2H. Texas Co. was un favorably influenced by the declining market in Standard Oil shares, and opened down 2 points. T radius au through tne forenoon was active with the tone irregular, and with a general dispo sition of trader to take a more hopeful view. Manv of the room trader were buyers of stocks and reported that there waa less pressure than in manv day. Th coppar stock were steady at fractional ad vances. - The market turned much stronger to th after noon on vigorous buying. Nearly all the promi nent Issues moved up from 2 to 3 point. The inside" story of the bottling up of the German submarine base at Zeebrugse by the British last April waa told here today for the first time by Captain K. E. Carpenter, R. N., V. C. hero of the exploit- Captain Carpenter is here in a ape- cial mission for his government, the nature of which he declines to divulge pending the presentation of his creden tials to the department of state at Washington. He arrived on the steamer Balmoral Castle of the Cunard line. Intimate details of the historic ex ploit as told by Captain Carpenter re veal for tha first time that tha suc cessful attempt was the third made by the British navy. Two previous at tempts were foiled by sudden changes n the wind, when the "bottling up fleet waa almost under the nosea of the German land batteries and managed to make Its ecsape unseen. I Vindictive Leads Way The successful exploit came on the night of April 23, when three "block ships," or cruisers, laden with con crete were sunk in . the mole of the Belgian port, .two German destroyers sent-to the bottom and .a third driven to cover. So successful was tha enter prise that the British lost only 70 men In killed and 200 captured. Moreover, all of the bodies but 12 of the victims were brought back to British soil. Captain Carpenter led the way to Zeebrugge aboard the old battleship Vindictive. The vessel ran to within 0 yards of the German land batteries and kept up a furious gun duel with them while the concrete laden cruisers were being sunk In the channel. No fewer than 225 German guns were raking the Vindictive as fast as they could be fired, Captain Carpenter aald, while hia men were bottling up the Hun under sea raiders In port and blocking the way for cruising submarines to return. The Vindictive carried approximately 1000 men to Zeebrugge, Four hundred of these men went ashore, climbing the parapet of the mole and capturing seven of the big guns. Later three more big pieces were 'taken. Betas to Leave Shis Meanwhile the cruisers Intrepid, Pithigenla and Thetis entered the har bor and steamed full speed ahead for their objective with a storm of shells falling all around them. The Intrepid got farthest into the passage way. The Pithigenla waa sunk a short distance behind her and the Thetis near tha out let oi tne cnanneL Ail or the crew of the Intrepid escaped. There were 87 men aboard her when she ran the gaunt let into the harbor. Captain Carpenter said he had Intend ed to permit but 60 men to stay aboard the cruiser when she entered the harbor, but when the vessel was halted to ef fect a transfer of odd men aboard none waa found. They had hidden below decks. SOLDIERS IX IT WITH SOCIALISTS Mass Meeting at Madison Square Garden Results in Riots and Arrests.
