latest special report gathered thr.uRh crop
correapondenta of The Journal, Indicate that
while warm weather ia now generally shown la
the ' Interior, the crop haa grown slowly be
ranae of the cold period, .although no serious
damage haa been inflicted. This is lust con
trary ts previous Information received here, al
though former report all indicated that warm
weather would ha e-enerallv welcomed
Edward I.. Well of the Portland office of
Continued -tow night temperatures, deficient
sunshine, with cold north winds and little or
no rainfall were the predominating weather fea
ture of the past- week, and they proved very
detrimental to crop germination and growth In
practically all portions of the state. l.tcht to
heavy frosts occurred on three nights, but the
damage was mostly -confined to tender vegeta
tion on low lands end frtrlt In a few places.
Farm work kept well up and in scattered
localities waa somewhat in advance of the aver
age season.
. -Winter wheat 1 heading In southern counties
and needs ram to make it fill or tha crop win
be cut for hay: it la turning yellow and requires
warm weather for best results. East of the
Cascadea thia staDle la in . better ahane. but I
beginning to show the tl$ effects of drought and
frosty nights. Winter rye and barley, are also
needing out, oat require moisture to make
full crop. Growth waa very alow and the stand
wea being destroyed by wire won&a in aom
items.
The germination and growth of spring sown
wheat and oats were retarded by tha cold
weather; they are coming up spotted in some
places on account of drought, and in others are
being infested with aphis and showing poor
KI1UB.
Droughty conditions are also having a deleteri
ous effect on grasses. Alfalfa ia short, being
only about one half the average where it is be
ing cut in nouinem uregon. 1 I'astures are dry
ing up arid need warm rains greatly, especially
in the foot hills. Aphis has practically de
stroyed some fields of vetch in tha Willamette
valley and the ground is being plowed for plant
ing to other crops.
The cold weather appears to be delaying sheep
sheering in some districts, but this work is
about completed in others and the sheep turned
on range. livestock as a rule is in fairly good
condition.
.Apples, pears and cherries have set well in
the Uodd River valley, with heavy crops in
prospect. In southern counties fruit made slow
growth -and was injured some by late frosts,
but on the whole is in fair to good shaps; in
lane county it la doing fine and showing lees
fungus than usual at this season of the year.
Home grown strawberries are being received on
the market ia limited Quantities.
Some froat injury to corn, potatoes and gar
dens waa reported. Corn ia turning yellow from
lack of sunshine; warm nights and moisture are
also essential for its proper development. Pota
toes are looking fine and healthy in Clackamas
county, some of the early planted being four to
six inches high; in some other later sections
planting ia aiiil under way with about a normal
acreage.

Supplies Badly Needed by Coast Mills
Cannot Be. Brought Here From

y Hyman H. Cohen.
Portland haa bees named at the'; official as
sembling place for Pacific Northwest wool by
the government, neverthleea even government offi-
clala are trying to nullify thia action by ad
vising wool men to ship their fleece direct to
the Atlantic seaboard. Thia wool is needed for
the coast mills and tnuat be reshipped from
Boston.
The Influences of the big Boston house
seem to be nation wide, for even in tba Portland
dealer 'circles there appear to be no loyalty
whatever to thia city and strenuous efforts are
being made to undermine whatever influence
thia city haa. - v
Notwithstanding the fact that thia haa been
named the place for assembling Pacific North
west wools, no leea a person than Lewie Pen
well. Chief of the wool division of the war Indus
tries board, with headquarters in Washington. D.
V., haa plainly asked, growen to shin their eup
pliee to the Atlantic seaboard and eliminate
Portland. Just where the chief of the bureaa
gets hia Information ia a mystery to the trade
hare, but nevertheless his message to a Lewie
ton man has censed much damage to Portland's
reputation aa a wool center. Later he Issued
orders against Idaho shipments to thia city.
Even though Mr. Penwell haa told the wool
men to shin direct to the east, higher authori
ties In the government have repeatedly said that
Portland is the center to ship to in thia section.
Not- only ia Portland named the center for
aasemblirur wools for eastern shinment and tba
grower who sends hia supplies to this city will
secure )ot.ae much money and perhaps get it
quicker than snipping direct to the east but a
very large per cent of the better grade of wool
will be needed by Oregon-Washington mills to
manufacture cloth arm doming as wen as blank
eta for government order already received.
Even though Boston interest through their
allied dealers 'are toying to claim that wool
shipped to Portland must be inspected m the
eaat before payment ia received; such la not the
case for inspection la already being made bare
end when the new clipe are available the work
will be carried on just as will be done at other
designated centers.

"You are no doubt aware that the amount of
wools needed in the Willamette valley and Port

that he state. In fact, I am Informed that
6,000,000 or 7,000,000 pounds Will i not meet
the full requirements ajid thia, taken: witn the
requirement of Northern California: and the
mills In that section of the country, would prob
