JO I Steel Ships Are
: Delivered in Week
Washington, May 21. (I. N. S.) Ten
Steel ships were completed and deliv
ered and 14. both wood and steel, were
launched last week from the yards of the
emergency fleet corporation, the shipping
beard has announced. These added 6$,
IS0 tons to American shipping. Four
wooden ships' were launched Saturday,
making 23 of this type to be launched
this month.

Camp Lewis Crowd
Is Record Breaker
In anticipation of an Immediate order
for the transfer of the Ninety-first di
vision of the .United States army from
Camp Lewis to the Eastern seaboard,
a large number of enlisted men visited
Portland Sunday. Officials of the O-W.
It. & N. and Northern Pacific report a
record volume of passenger traffic norfh.
from Portland Sunday night.
Regular trains leaving the .Union sta
tion at 11 and 11:30 p. m. carried ca
pacity loads, and a special train was
provided by the O-W. R. & K. to, take
care of the overflow. This probably will
be the farewell visit to their homes of
members of the Ninety-first division liv
ing In Portland.

Exporting Merchants
Must Pay Income Tax
Washington, May 11. (U. P. The
fast that a merchant makes his Income
by exporting goods from the- country
does not relieve him from paying an
income tax, the supreme court decided
Monaty.
William E. Peck, a New York City
exporter, refused to pay his income tax
assessment on the ground that such a
payment would be in effect a duty on
exports, which is forbidden by the con
stitution. 1
The court pointed out that the income
tax la not laid on products in the course
of exportation, but on what is made after
all expenses of the business are paid.
Lad of 14 Says He
Broke Into Office
Upon report from the Oregon Cooper
age company that its office had been
entered three times within a week, De
tectives Goltz and Howell conducted an
investigation and reported that a 14-year-old
boy 'has confessed. .Last Fri
day night the office was entered and
the telephone box destroyed, the offtce
desk broken open and the hinge knobs

Aid to Switzerland
Promised by France
Paris, May 21. (I. N. S.) In a note
to Switzerland with regard to the coal
situation, the French government says
that if Germany "lyingly Insinuated"
that France ia threatening Switserland
with an economic war, she "confounds
Switserland with herself.". The note la
friendly toward Switzerland, saying
Switzerland's sovereignty Is affected
by the German encroachment, France
"will know how to take measures com
porting with the protection of our inter
ests." It promised French aid, despite
the Swiss-German economic agreement
had also been drilled into the safe. The
police say the boy haa served two sen
tences in the reform school at Chehalia.
He is now In the custody of the juvenile
court.

Secretary of Agriculture Houston, as

asked draft exemption for 2000 employes
of this department. ,
Umatilla County Nearly Over
Pendleton. Or.. May 21. At the end
of the first day of the second Red Cross
drive, Umatilla county has more than
110.000 of her IST.000 quota subscribed,
with some ot the remote district yet to
be heard from. Pendleton la within $5000
of the 117.500 quota assigned it. About
100 committees were out today, under
the supervision of the Umatilla County
Patriotic Service league, which la con
ducting the drive.
