2IEVY POTATOES ARE CONSISTED
- Indicating a much greater supply and a wrsker
market tone la the consignment by some inter
ests of new potatoes Uarket here Is gener
ally quoted at 6o a pound, according to
quality and sine of purchase.
Tha first sign of Impeding hot weather is
shown in tha trade with . en initial advance of
60c a case in tha price of lemons. For soma
time the lemon market has t- -low and in
dined to indicate dullness and even weaker
values. Hot weather in always a sign for Cali
fornia growers to "do their bit" in the way
of price fixing and the way they fix prices
u generally one way: puttttnc them higher.
For price boosting tha average dealer bis be
come an amateur at the game, the v'kltfornia
grower has him backed oft the map. The big
growers' organizations in tlte south so completely
control matters tnat they are the real czar of
tha trad. They make a price and if you don't
lute It. it makes little difference. If vou want
the goods you must pay.
Oregon produce- nave in years oast said
to be past masters in the ways of advancing
prices, out tney are mere children in Uie game
as compared with tha tactics of tha California
shippers.
STRAWBERRY PRICES ARE MIXED

Oregon strawberry season will be generally
onened within a few davs. althouch small ahin-
menta have been received upon the Market tot
a number ot days.
Crop ad rices from the country are mixed
but it la generally believed that near aa aver?
age crop ul be gathered.
Demand for berrtea will ea so keen that n
is thought generally that the price will be Ilk
U other foodstuffs way n. in tha air. This
ii indicated by the action of tha canners in
offering 8e a pound for berries this season:
and the grower received back his boxes and
i rates, beside Is not compelled to tb expensive
packing.
Vnlese canners are overloaded with offerings
it Is more than likely -that tha public 'will pay
dearly for its appetit for fresh strawberries.
bucb a price as the canners are oftsnng today
would bare been considered trade suicide in any
other season, but evidently the packing interests
feel they are going to strike a good market for
they are offering to take everything in tight
of a canning variety.
