hotel and garage men report receivings a
great many inquiries of the same tenor
from motorists In Portland, the Willam
ette valley and Eastern Oregon.
No satisfactory answer can be given to
the constantly Increasing number of In
qulrles, but Hood River people who have
recently Inspected the portions of the
Highway now under construction declare
that the road cannot be opened before
the tnlridia of Jul v. at the earliest, unless
construction work Is materially speed
ed up.
Present Road Is Blocked '
When the contracts were let last fall
they called for completion - of all units
before May 1. That date is now but two
weeks distant, and the end of the con
struction work Is . not In sight,' Hood
River people who have kept In touch with
the work feel that an emergency exists,
and that Influence should be brought to
bear to hasten the work on the highway.
According to present indications, the
last link of the highway to be completed
will be that at Ruthton hill, three miles
west of this city. There the roadway Is
being blasted out alone a rocky precip
itous hillside. Blasts which were touched
off two weeks ago completely burled the
existing road, and as there are no means
of constructing a temporary road at this
place, Its completion will determine the
opening of the highway for through
travel between Eastern and Western
Oregon. Two steam shovels were to
have been put Into operation at this
point In order to rush Its completion.
However, it seems that one of them was
demanded at another point, and so a
single shovel Is slowly working westward
along the cliff.
Small Force Employed
Another section where a large amount
of difficult work must -be done is that
between Bonny and Lindsay. The old
road here wound around numerous rocky
points, which made it the most difficult
and dangerous portion of the road in
this county. These rocky points are
being blasted away and numerous fills

are being made, but it is slow work, and
hardly more than a score of men are em
ployed there at the present time. There
seems little likelihood thrft this section
will be completed before July at the ear
liest; that ia, unless operations are
speeded up. j
Contractors1 on the work declare that
they have found It almost Impossible to
secure competent and reliable workmen.

peded work as much a possible. Since a
19 hour day was established, however,
with pay of $4.50 a day, the labor prob
lem hrn been less dirrtcult.
While members of the Hood River
county court are noncommittal when
asked as to whether the work is being
prosecuted to their satisfaction, local
citizens who have kept in touch with its
progress are outspoken In their opinion
that the state highway commission should
insist upon having the work, already far,
behind contract .schedule, prosecuted
with all possible dispatch.
: Mosler Survey Finished
The new survey of the highway be
tween this city and Mosler has been
completed, and surveyors who have been
employed on the work report that the
state highway commission will let the
contract in about two weeks. The sur
vey paralleling the railroad having been
abandoned, the new route is located ap
proximately half way between the rail
road track and the present road, which
goes over the hill.

W. M. Black has been appointed to take
his place. Mr. Black has arrived from
Bandpoint, Idaho, where he has been
foreman of a creamery. He was for
merly buttermaker at O. A. G, and has
also acted as tester and dairy expert In
Coos county.

tire territory west of the Rocky moun
tains, spent a short while last week
with the C. L. Boss automobile company,
the local Hudson distributors. Mr.
Lewis makes hla headquarters in 8a n
Francisco, where a complete stock of
parts for Hudson cars Is kept on hand
for supplying distributors on the coeat.
Shipments of parts from the Hudson
factory In Detroit are difficult to get.
according to Mr. Lewis, and a great
many of them are being shipped by
express at the present time.
"Conditions appear to be very favor
able in the Northwest," said Mr. wts.
'much more so than In California. I
have spent several weeks In the North-:
west territory and It is the busiest place
I have been for quite a while. The
progress of the shipbuilding Industry
is amazing and very Interesting, and
should help create a very prosperous
condiUon for this section.
'As for the motor car situaUon; if
other distributors are experiencing the
same demand aa Hudson distributors
in this territory with whom I have
talked, buyers of motor cars should act
now If they would have the car of their
choice. The majority of our distribu
tors have demand enough now from the
cities where they are located to use up
their entire allotment for the state. ' Of
course, much depends upon the condi
tion of the railroads and the factories
to deliver automobiles."
Mr. Lewis left Friday evening for San
Francisco and expects to make it trip
to Detroit about the first of the month.
