V THE OREGON DAILY . JOURNAL; PORTLAND. FRIDAY, APRIL ,12, 1918. 18 I STANDIFER YARD : A VMM 5 GOING UP RAPIDLY ; Site Looks Like Mushroom Patch I: With Many Buildings Already & Nearing Completion. MACHINERY TO BE MASSIVE ' Sixty-Acre Tract Is Being Used for New Steel Ship Plant on Columbia River. ts aboft completed and the pile driving; for two is finished. All of the pUlng along- he ; waterfront is completed. Tha dredgisg will b finished in a week. With tha put-put of various donkey engines, the swish of concrete ma chines,! the rasp, , scrapers, teams and auto trucks going to and fro, and (surveyors, carpenters and 'laborers, bending- to their tasks, the site is a veritable beehive of industry. Tweaty carloads of lumber are belns unloaded at present. Considerable trackafe has been laid on the tract. Its total lengtn iigures up to over two miles, but when the laying of trackage is completed It will measure three and a half, miles. The 'main office building has been occupied. All the chief members of the office, force at the wood shipyard near the Interstate bridge are now located; in this building, together wlta an additional force of clerks and stenographers, added to assist in taking care of the Increased work. The Supper floor, which was specially designed tor the purpose, with glasj skylights, houses the big force ot draftsmen and the scene on this floor Is one; of great activity. i The way buildings and other struc- tures are rising on the site of the steel shipyard of the O. M. Standlfer Con istructlon corporation at Vancouver, tho ; 60 acre tract reminds one of a mush- loom patch. ' The building that will house the yard :' office is ud and at the present rate !will soon be completed. Work on the 1 miner works of the punch shed, which will cover four acres of space, being dm rt on wav and 400 the other, is row in progress. The concrete foun ' datlon and the concrete sets for all the machinery are In place. An Idea -of the massive size Of some of the ' machinery can be gained when it ! considered that some of these concrete sets occuoy spaces large enough to ''.fccoommodate the average small build i't'lng.
