of about five miles would compel the

. The British positions In this sector
are admirably constructed for defensive
fighting. They can be made Into death
traps for the Germans, whose system of
massed attacks is particularly liable to
slaughter before the ridge on which the
Biitlsh defenses are based. If these
ridge positions should fall to Hinden
burg, however, the district beyond would
present less difficulties, because it is
downhill to Ypres.
The capture of Ypres- Is chiefly de
sired by the Germans, not so much be
cause of any special military value, but
because of the moral effect the kaiser
thinks may be produced In Great Brit
ain. Much glory of British arms has
been gained in the Ypres area and the
recapture of the sector by the Germans
would doubtless come as a shock.
' But the selection of Ypres as an ob
jective by Hindenburg gives Marshal
Haig a splendid opportunity to admin
ister the second major defeat to. the
Germans in the course of their recent
drive. The first defeat came with the
abandonment of further operations
against Amiens. If Hindenburg is soon
compelled to cease his slaughter of Ger
man troops In the Ypres sector, the re
sult cannot fail to be highly dlsheart
enlng to the Germans at home, count
ing up their dead.

Rider Trouble and Lengthy Litigation.
Aberdeen, Wash., April 12. Mrs. Mar
garet Rosa has lo3t out in another ef
fort to secure title to the valuable tim
ber claim in the North river country
for which she has contended several
years and which resulted in the night
rider troubles and lengthy litigation.
After a recent decision of the land de
partment at Washington In favor of
Mrs. Vanderpool, whose title to claim
Mrs. Ross disputed, Mrs. Ross went to
Washington and asked for a rehearing.
This was granted and a decision again
was given in favor of Mrs. Vanderpool.
The timber on the homestead is said to
be worth between $20,000 and $30,000.

Complete and categorical denial ofthe
story carried Thursday by the" Associ
ted Press that the navy had established
and was fortifying a naval base In the
Azores, was made by Secretary of the
Navy Josephus Daniels, who today re
turned to Washington. Thursday after
noon Acting Secretary Franklin D
Roosevelt not only denied the story, but
stated that it was a repetition of a
story promulgated from pro-German
sources two months ago and designed
to cause friction between the United
States and Portugal.
"There is absolutely no truth In this
report," Mr. Daniels stated. "Not on.y
is this so, but I have personally Inquired
of Acting Secretary of tho Navy Roose
velt and Admiral Benson whether any
such publication was authorised and
have been assured that It -was not. Wi
have no naval base there."
The secretary waa directly asked
about the further statement tn the re
port that the navy had landed guns
which were to be mounted In Azores
harbor to defend it and to safeguard
the southern trade routes.
"That also Is untrue and without
foundation," he replied.
Secretary Daniels made it plain that
American vessels used ports In the
Axores as they use ports elsewhere to
get . coal and for shelter from storms.
But he also emphasised that this In no
way constituted establishment of a naval
base or any taking over of sovereignty
from Portugal.
Florence Boy Killed -
In Airplane Accident
Information has been received' that
Allen Matthews of Florence. Or was
killed March 28 in an airplane fall in
Kngland. Matthews enlisted tn the avia
tion service a year ago and after pre
liminary training at Camp Kelly was
sent to England with other American
aviators to complete his flying course
before combating Hun air raiders.
Matthews waa the son of O. S. Matthews
of Florence and brother of Mrs. J. D.
Cook of Portland,. His body may be sent
to Florence for burial. .

pioneer of '47, who died Sunday, was

Seventeen Horses
Burned at Track

Seventeen horses were burned to death
at Bowie today when a stable at the
race track was destroyed by fire. Among
the horses burned were : George W
Avery, owned by George Winifred of
Texas; Kagle of the Calumet Stables,
and Harwood, owned by William (Red)
Walker. A number of two-year-olds
were lost.
The stable burned was known as
"Stable M." This was the second fire in
this stable this year, and the third fire.
