: i THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, WEDNESDAY. APRIL 10, 1918. BAILEY GATZERT GOES TO SEATTLE UNDER NEW FLAG Popular1, Excursion Steamer of Columbia River Fame Trans . ferred to Puget Sound Service ! C. R. & P. S. T. NEW OWNER Big Sternwheeler, for Many Years Speediest Boat of Type in trie River Trade, Is Sold. 1 rortlind, waterfront was In gloom ,thls morning- as If an old and tried friend had paused away. In fact, such a friend I had gone on the Bailey Gat Bert, old! sternwheel steamboat which Druggist Tells Dys peptics Best Thing to Use In reply to an inquiry as to what was. In his opinion, the best all round rem edy for indigestion, dyspepsia and stomach .troubles generally, J. IL How arth. a druPKlwt of many years' experi ence and widely known in his profes sion, says : -' "As a druggist I have filled thousands of prescriptions for the best physicians in my city, ana naturauy Know wim thv think la best: I have also talKed with hundreds, yes thousands V of stomach sufferers, and know what a-tven them most relief. Therefore, it im with an Intimate knowledge of both Ides of the question-1 that I unhesi tatingly say: Nine times out of ten the best thing for pain in the stomach. be It Indigestion, gastrins, ayspepsia, or whatever you wish to call it. Is to take a teaspoonful of Bl-nesia, or two or three of the 5-graln tablets In a little hot water right after eating o.- when ever pain is felt. I know that many physicians make it a practice to keep a suDDly of Bl-nesia tablets on hand to dispense to their patients, and I have read many letters from people who vol untarlly state that Bl-nesla gave imme diate relief and comfort after all other means had failed. So you can see why I have such confidence in- Bl-nesia Moreover, and this appeals particularly to those : who have spent large sums without getting relief, you can try Bl- nesia without risking a cent, for every package, either powder or tablet form, contains a binding guarantee contract of satisfaction or money back ; and the druggist you buy It from stands back of that guarantee." (Adv.) for (decades has been the pride of the Columbia and Willamette. News of the: steamer's sale by the Regulator line to the Puget Sound Navigation company was announced late Tuesday by Drake C. O'Reilly, head of the Regulator HneJ The vessel is to be taken to Puget Sound j as soon as she can be "made ready for the voyage and, it is understood, will be placed on the Seattle-Bremerton run. Thus will end the career In this dis trict of a vessel held fondly In the hearts of Oregon people, many of whom remember the Bailey Gatzert as chil dren; a vessel that has carried many ati excursion crowd on the Columbia and has given valiant service in the regular river trade between Portland, Astoria and The Dalles. The Bailey" Gatzert has been a familiar object In multitudes of pictures, showing river scenes, and has added much to those scenes because of her picturesque appearance. The steamer was the largest of the stern wheeler fleet here and was noted as the speediest. Caincldentally, the Gatzert is going back to the scene of her birth, for It was In 18'JO that she was built at Ballard, Waa4c Ballard la now a part of Seat tle, which will be her hailing port. Tho vessel was launched November 22. of that year, for the Seattle Steam Naviga tion; St Transportation company, lier dimensions are 177.3 feet long, 32.3 feet beam and 8 feet depth of hold. After making a few trips for the orig inal ; owners she went to the Columbia River & Puget Sound Transportation company, for operation between Seat-! tie nd Olympia. It was in 1892 that she was brought to Portland for the ex cursion trade. From her decks thousands of tour ists from all parts of the world have viewed acenery along the Columbia riv er, and thousands of Oregonians have enjoyed a day's outing aboard her on excursions In honor of memorable occa sions. Ini 1895 the vessel was given an ex-1 tensive overhauling. She was originally equipped with poppet-valve engines. But in course of time she was equipped with new engines and boilers and a new hull.1 In fact almost the only original feature of the steamer left Is the cabin and : pilot house. After overhauling in 1895 she was placed on the Portland-Astoria run. wltft the old steamers Telephone and Ocean e. Later she went into the Port- and-The Dalles service, being under the ownership of The Dalles, Portland &. Astoria Navigation company. Later the Spokane, Portland & Seattle railroad purcnased the boat and continued the service. It was in April. 1915. that Mr. O'Reilly bought the vessel and continued the service with the steamer Dalles City on. the upper river houte. The Gatzert, however, was operated In the excursion trade during the summer. Last Novem ber Iboth vessels were taken off the run, the company announcing that continua tion oi me service was Impracticable ow ing to tne increased cost of operation. Since then the steamers have been tied up. Representing the Puget Sound com pany In the deal Tuesday was Captain Joshua Green, the well known steamboat owner. He arrived In the city Tuesday noon and returned that night with the bill of sale. thlnt atexm iiiiUxrv schooner sent ti.i- J .-- aeme; 1 SO. , . . Lneal Rnarrf of Arbitration to Con-I. sider Demands or Longshoremen. That the local longshoremen's wage dispute will be left up to a local arbi tration board Is the word received by the Chamber of Commerce from Wash ington this morning. The dispute will be given such consideration in the next few days, it is said. The longshoremen are asking an In crease for handling cargoes of deep water vessels to 85 cents an hour. They are being paid 65 cents. They further ask $1 to $1.25 for overtime. This Is greatly in excess of what is being paid on Puget Sound and other Pacific ports. The longshoremen here claim that they should be paid more than those at other ports, alleging that the work here is not sufficient to gain remunerative incomes. While no strike is on. many have left their jobs. Those remaining on the jobs have as sumed an independent attitude and cases have been reported where they have re fused to do odd bits of work when not engaged In the actual work of load ing a vessel, though drawing pay zor the full time. Another government steamer Is to be loaded here this week. The work Is scheduled to start Friday and must pro ceed without delay, it is declared, if Portland's record is to be maintained.
