Ths trade here seems to have awakened to the
fact at but that despite all its ef forte to hold

prices are at bent but reflection of supply and
demand.
A long aa there wee an acute ehortage of bat
tel In the Pacific Northwest and atocka were high
priced elsewhere, it waa quite possible for neak
en to establish almost any price witbing reason,
and maintein It. When California began to show
big aurplua and the trade there started to
market in other section, then the situation
began to change here. Irrespective of the fact
that butter et that time waa scarce here so far
aa the home output was concerned, the offering
of the southern product at lower prices meant
the downfall of values here. In UMee days
ehortaae in one section of the country is made
ur b a surplus elsewhere and pricee are there
fore made by the eost of securing these sup
plies. for the first time in an extended period the
price of butterfat is exactly the same as the fell
ing price of butter In" parchment wrappers. For
long period premiums of several cents were
available.
EGO TRADE INCLINED TO JjAG
Market for eggs fa inclined to show a lagging

lots are shown to retailers at a fraction more.

BAXAXA PRICR WILIi BE BAISED
. Higher price for tiananas Is generally expected
here within a short time, on account of the
higher eost in the south. It is stated that pack
Ing coats more then the amount charged country
buyers, and a rise in thai line is Decennary.
rOTATO SALES ARE VERY SMALL
'A very few carloads of potatoes are reported
purchased at nearby country points at 70 75c
per cental, f. o. b. country stations for U. 8.

being made to California.

An acuta shortage of hay is shown in the local
trade, due entirely to the lack of transportation
from Willamette valley and Eastern Oregon
Idaho points. Local buyers are getting an occa
sional carload, bat there is general: scram
ble among the trade to seeure a portion of these
for their immediate requirements. . This, there
fore, has caused a small premium to be forced
in the selling price of 'hay here, although there
is plenty of stock available in the country at for
mer prices. .
The milling division of the food administra
tion calls attention to the following package dif
ferentiala on flour i . i
Since the food administration "substitution
regulations' require the individual consumer pur
chaser to take equal quantities ot. flour substi
tutes with all purchase of wheat flour, thereby
changing the relation of the present minimum
1-1 Oth barrel mill package to total consumption,
it has been thought advisable to reinstate the sale
and packing of all customary commercial peck
ages of wheat flour on and after April 1, 1818:
Tha reinstatement of the sale, packing and
shipment of the smaller packages shall also apply
to self-rising flour, etc., which have up to this
time oaen packed under special permit

Higher prices have recently bean paid for South
America's poorest wool offerings than has been
offered in the eastern markets for tha better qual
ity domestic fleece. Interest in the new elips of
deals have been made secretly at still higher
figures.
The Columbia Basin Wool Warehouse company
reports that markets during the past two weeks
have been very active, values remaining about tha
same, with some grades higher.
Australian Wool Higher
f Recent auctions of Australian wools In Boston
show keen bidding, and on choicest wools market
waa 6 per cent to 1 per cent advance. Bulk of
offerings passed to the manufacturers. Even abort
wools are beginning to show some considerable ac
tivity, in fact all classes are very active. This is
reflected in our western markets, and on- cood
types have found ready sale at equal or better !
prices than have prevailed at any time during ;
the season.
Buying In South America has been very much
less since the government's decision to exercise
its option, but it is estimated that S3 per cent
or more of the super wools have bean taken In
the River Platte. In the meanwhile tha govern
ment is placing contracts here more or' less
steadily. Evidently the requirements of the
government will be very heavy.
Ores Brad lit Demand
Types of wooL which are likely cross bred, are
in considerably stronger demand, due to the re
quirements of the government, and the only
condition that prevents extreme activity prevail

This sentiment in a measure is substantially

Tha absence of spring lambs from the local
live t.tock market to data this season is remark
able and for ths tint time since tha Portland
yard were estabUahed there has been no move
ment for this period. There is a real reason
for such lack of movement of baby stuff upon
tha trade. Tha outlook for both wool and aheep
prices is so exceedingly good that lambs could
not be sold today below $20 per hundred pounds
and make a profit. . This would be almost a pro
hibitive price for tha killer to pay and would be
outrageous from the standpoint of the retailer
who in tut of necessity pass it on to the consum
er. There la sweh a firm tone and such extreme
