POINT ARENA ON MAIDEN! VOYAGE
'Deep water shipping in the local
harbor and shipbuilding operations
will under n circumstances be ln-
trfered with through any new regu
lations for the opening and closing
of draws3 on the bridges. This was
made plain at the meeting Monday
afternoon of various shipping men
'and others interested in the complaints
as to traffic tie-ups. The meeting
was held at the Chamber . of Com
merce. Consideration was given to the pro
posal from the corps of engineers. U.
S. A., to Inaugurate closing periods
for two hours in the morning and two
hours In the evenlnr during the rush
periods. It was held that this would
be too much latitude and would oper
ate against shipping Interests to
point of unfairness.
Sehedsle to Be Worked Ost
At the same time it was conceded
that delays- might prove a hajaicap
Jt shipyard workers on their way to
work. In view of this phase, the
Chamber of Commerce will get In
touch with the Portland Railway,
Xtght Power company today to see
. If some better schedule in regard to
; operation of cars during the rush
.- hours cannot be worked out. ,
i ' While holding the view that deep
' water shipping should not be inter
t erred with, some of ' those at the
meeting conceded that . delay of " river
craft was not so important, and it la
. probable that any new schedule will
be arranged so river craft will not
" cause delay. Most of the delays com
plained of are due to such vessels. It
Is said, for it is only once? In a great
while that deep watermen go above
., the bridges.
- However, It Is felt by some that
Vlver craft should not be delayed any
more than other shipping. It being
."pointed out that additional expense
would Invariably attach In cases of
any delays.
" ' , Aaother Meeting Planned
i t result of this, the full matter
.Will be given consideration at another
