Shown Competition at Country
Points Responsible for Recent Rise
When Drop Was Due.
Notwithstanding atrentiou efforts of certain
( fclg interest to bold th price of eg gs high at
this, time because soma of the small fellow
want to store for th winter, the market in,
. reality mar be considered a shade weaker here.
While It 'la true that as high as 85 He a

of the f. o. b. buyers during the last few days,
till these same interests are not offering above
,; 80s a dosen to wholesalers, indicating that
'-, after all they really are not anxious to secure
Competition at country points has been the
cause of the trade in eggs paying more for sup
plies thaa they could secure here. If one firm
went out with a $4e f. o. b. offer for eggs, a
' competitor to see him one better would offer
84 He, and stUl another would raise the ante
to I So. In this way the price of eggs has been
lifted even though actual market conditions call
for a decline.'
All parts of the country hare recently shown
swrtous price lease (or egg, and hare been quot

the only exceptions, end several carloads hare re
cently pees sent in that direction by local bouses.

OXIOX BETS ARE RATHER SCARCE
' Onion sets are rather scares in the local mar-
ket and prices sre showing a firm tone, even
." though the buying movement by city gardeners
has scarcely started. 11 cat sales are at 15 16c

JIEXS ARE SELLING AT 80 CENTS
Small supplies of nonlsying hens sre being
quoted up to 80c a pound by the local trade,
although a general decline in quotations is antio
, ipated as soon as the movement from the
country gets under way.

Barley fltmr has been practically withdrawn
from the market, so far aa local interests sre
concerned. While some of the mfflers an still
supplying their regular customers with scant
stocks, they are making no public offers of sup
plies. Total stocks of barley flour srs so scant
that millers are trying to conserve their holding
ana make them last aa long as possible.
Mil 1st jiffs continue to pile up at milling points
and the country is still crying for its require
ments. There is no change in the price; in fart,
little movement from the mills is shown because
of the greatest car ahortage on record.
The same shortage is creating a steady price in
tne nay division of the grata trade.
On February 1 every mill in the United States.
irrespective of capacity, was directed to come
under the supervision of the milling division
of the rood administration and to take out a mill

BUTTER PRICES- TOO HIGH
BUTTER PRICES ARE
WEAKER: SURPLUS IS
Everywhere There Is a Greater Sup
ply Than Demand and Prices Are
Weakening Portland Market Is
Considered Entirely Too High.
Extreme weakness is shown in the butter trade
an along the Pacific coast. While it is true that
Pacific Northwest cities have been maintaining
the price recently, still practically all interest
are now long on supplies.
It developed during the day that even Puget
Sound was looking for an outlet for its surplus
butter; in fact was offering cubes here at 47o
a pound for extras. The firm' receivetng this
offer . of supplies immediately wired tha Paget
Bound concern that instead of needing butter at
47c landed here, it was willing to tell this same
quality to the northern house at 46e a pound
landed at Seattle or Taeoma.
There appear to be a fictitious tone in tha
butter trade locally so far aa leading brands are
concerned. While It 1 true that tha local pro
duction of butter is not over liberal, still country
paints in this territory report an increasing output
and are showing a surplus, while California has
been offering less money for some time.
For awhile the butter people claimed that it
waa the condense ry interests who were forcing
butter price to abnormal figures, but this can
not be the case at the present time, for the con
densariea have been practically removed as com
petitors for the time being.

Bales, 286,100 shares; bonds, 8,160,000.
Kew Tork, March 21. (t N. S.) There
waa some irregularity to the trading at the open
big of the stock market today, with prices gen
erally showing gains.
American Car Foundry was active and strong,
advancing 1 H to 76 H . Industrial Alcohol con
tinued in good demand, moving up 1 to 1244.
and Distiller made an equal gain to 40 H.
V. 8. Steel moved up to 91 H. and Bethlehem

cele. Liberty second 4s advancing from 96.66
o 97.06, and the 3 Ha rose to 98.06.
Reading rose H to 83 H. while Canadian Pa
cific declined H to 136 H and Union Pacific

Nearly all the interest in the market was con
centrated in the Liberty bond issues. Most at
tention waa dsvoted to the second 4s, which rose
to 97.64. followed by a reaction to 97.10. Tha
8Hs ranged from 98.02 to 98.50. with a reac
tion to 98.30.
The stock market tone was irregular all
through the early forenoon. Corn Products ad
vanced 1 point to 87 H, passing tha high record

tinued under pressure, falling 1 point to 66 H .

While there is a better situation in tha local
provision trad as a result of the lack of eastern
products along the coast, killers are holding prices
unchanged her while there waa a further frac
tional rise in the east.
Provisions prices here are higher than in the
east, although the swine market is not quite so
high locally. Nevertheless, there was a ateady
tone in the local swine market and values were
maintained with no real top offering.

Top Plenty Offered at This Price
but Buyers Not Taking Chance. ,
PoUto market never waa so limited la volume
of trading at this period of the season aa today.
A half dozen ears all toM have been purchased
in this section to date this week at 75c per
cental f. o. b. country points for TJ. 8. grade
No. 1. At th price there is plenty of pototbea
offering but no buyers in sight. The dealers
who purchased at this price are unable to sell
them at a profit at the moment. Some stock
of this same grade received at San Francisco
recently sold down to $1 per cental, notwith
standing any higher price that the trade there
may arbitrarily place uoon the market.
Fact that San Francisco Is quoting a higher
price need fool no on her.' If higher price
could be obtained there and there waa a real
demand for supplies, the country tributary to
Portland would be filled with California buyer.
As matters stand there is no desire among south
ern interests to take hold.
Along Front street average sale of potatoes
even in single tack lota do not rang above $1
per cental and the volume of business is almost
too small to consider.
Onion market is lifeless so far as demand from
outside points is concerned. A carload or two
have been sold by the local growers' association
during the last week or so at $1.25 per cental
f. o. b. shipping point but this is th extent
of the business.
Approximately speaking there are only pos
sibly 35 or 40 carloads of socalled No. 1 onions
remaining in tha hands of the Confederate Onion
Growers' association. This is a mere handful
if there were a normal demand. Even as matters
stand, it will be only a short period when there
will be nothing left to offer.

The British have recently extended
their front southward and now it Joins
the French at a point south of St.

In this same connection it has been
stated that the Germans might try to
drive a wedge between the two- armies.
If such was the plan of the German
high command, the German
armies
would be flung forward In the district
In which the artillerying was reported.
At tne same time some French mill-

Germans might launch a "Joint offert-

the Western front.
..Gas Shells Sent Over
Ht William Vknii. sin.
With the British Armies In France.
March 21. (U. P.) The Germans be
gan a heavy bombardment at 5 o'clock
this morning, from a point Just south
of the Scarps river to the right flank
of the British armies, south of Sti Quen-
tin. (This is a distance of about 50
miles in an airline and comprises nearly
io mues or iront.)
From the same hour on, considerable
firing was reported in the Messlnes sec
tor (Messines is in Belgium, six miles
south of Tpres and about 85 miles north
of the Scarpe.)
At 4 o'clock this morning the enemy
began bombarding with gas sheHs the
Fleurbalx . and Armentteres sectors
(Armentleres Is six miles south of Mes
sines, and Fleurbalx is four miles south
of Armentleres.) This' bombardment
was still tinder way at 8 o'clock.
Thus, along almost the whole of the
British front, cannonading began to
rumble and speed up, but at the early
hour of cabling, no further details
were available.
For the past two weeks the front
has been growing more feverish. Over
one hundred raids have been carried
out by both sides, while the battle
ln the air has never ceased. The Gr- i
mans have made particularly frenzied
attempts to prevent the allies from
i ij-ing over tneir tines, meanwhile, mak
lng the most desperate efforts to recon
nolter the. British disposition of forces.
As I conclude this dispatch, the gun.
are still belching flame and steel.
