Hperiar care should be taken by home
gardener to mrur the greatest amount
of production In the smallest amount of
groilpd area. To do this extreme cau
tion must be taken in preparation for
tne garden.
Poor soil found tn backyard)) and In
the empty lots used as war garden
can be improved. Barn manure will aid
the richest aou. The coarse manure
should be placed on the ground in the
fall and at this time of tha year, fine
rotted manure should be applied. If
the ground Is rich the manure may be
scattered In "the row - only and mtxed
with the soil before planting time.
Ixam Is considered the best garden
-soil, while sand mined wlh manure
Klves good results. Clay Is difficult to
work but may be Improved by tho use
of .well-rotted manure. Sifted coal
ashes, free from clinkers, will help
loosen ' up clay.
Home gardeners depend upon com
mercial fertilizer procured from the seed
houses for use In preparing the soil
for gardening and In most cases this
practice has resulted in speedy- grow
ing of the vegetables.

general treatment Many gardeners use
berry" bushes on the sides of the garden
plot as a protection to the gardens from
dogs and oat. '
.The majority of succesful gardeners
ad vise- to plant early, even though in
so doing there is some danger from late
frosts,. Great advantage will be- found
In planting; in 'straight rows. This will
make the weeding and cultivation easier.
The rows should run north and south
to secure the maximum amount of sun
shine. r-' .-- - .
Small seeds . should .' not be planted
deeply because they must work through
the soil. $y raking the ground well
smaller plants will have a better op
portunitytf growing. Seeds should not
be planted too thick. Authorities claim
that 1918 will see the greatest seed
shortage- In history, and if for no otheH
reason that conservation, seeds should
not be too waatefully sown.
For plants such as cabbage, cauli
flower, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and
egg plants, an outdoor: hotbed is practi
cal. This should be placed In a shelter
ed place with exposure so that It will
recei an ample supply of Sunshine. -Not
many implements are required
for home gardening. ,' The necessary
ones are a spade or garden fork, a.
hoe, a rake with steel teeth, a trowel
and a heavy cord for marking off the
rows.
Food Valses a Ceatlderatlon
Food values should be considered in
the selection of the vegetables to be
planted. Of these the best are beans,
peas. corn,, potatoes, parsnips, turnips,
cabbage, cauliflower, radishes, toma
toes, and celery.
Vegetables that can be saved for
vlntAr iim hv ranntnr. drvlnr or Stor- I
lng should .be planted in quantity and
care should be taken so that an over i
supply of vegetables that must be con-'
sumed as they mature will not result
One should not plant too deeply. Some
gardeners remain by an old rule to plant
to a depth of five-timer the size of the
seed, but competent authorities say that
this rule is not an absolute one, and is
not safe tn all cases.
Hoeing should . commence when the
greeny row appear. Never hoe or culti
vate too deeply an Inch, or two is deep
enough, but it is well to stir the ground
frequently, especially after a rain or
watering as soon as the ground is dry
enough. The hoeing should not be
done -while - the ground is wet and
muddy, as. this will cause the 'ground
to cake and . dry out rapidly.
Moisture is essential to a garden, but
it is better to water a garden well
once or twice a week than It is to
apply water every day.
Protection Agalatt Pest
Precaution . should be taken against
cut worms and other pests found in the
garden. The burning of ail trash and
wood found in the garden area and all
stocks from plants that have been die-'
eased . will . aid In the fight against
pests.
A nicotine spray is effective against
cut worms which play havoc 1n many
gardens.
will destroy the pests if used soon
enough. The ' garden pests should not
be allowed ah opportunity to 'continue
the destruction of the tender plants.
Small spraying outfits can be pro
cured at a reasonable cost" "and the
spraying should 'commence early. Hy
drated limo which Is tn powder form
can be used to advantage against ordin
ary blights.
For the destruction of Insects which
suck the sap of plants, such as plant
lice or aphis, it 1 necessary to use a
mixture which kiUs by contact or sub
stances which smother..'' v
Insects which eat fruit or foliage must
be destroyed by poisonous solutions,
auch as arsenate of lead, but great pre
caution must be taken as this solution
in poisonous to human beings. It should
never be used on vegetables soon to be
used or on cabbage and cauliflower
after the heads' begin -to.- forra.;
Frequent spraying during the season
Is often necessary; as many generations
are born throughout, a season. A
bordeaux mixture is most generally
used in keeping blight -diseases jffm
the potato crop. . - , . f

Women Architects Trained
To Combine House, Garden

Harvard University Has Class of Young. Women Whose Teaching
Emphasizes the Proper Co-ordination of the House and
Grounds. . ' . "' ' , '
The perfect house ' and the , perfect!
garden, from a- womans standpoint.;
may begin to be "realised' when Harv
ard's class of young women architects
graduate, scatter out aver' the country
and begin to practice their" profession.
The university at Cambridge has a
class of 1? young women, studying hard
to learn how to build an ideal small
house and 1 surround it with Ideal
ground. Says the. New York Evening
Post : : -
"No longer will the woman who wants
a home built after her own ideals have
to go , to a- sympathetic man " who
has no more idea of the importance
of numerous closets or that there must
be a suitable place in a bedroom for
a bed or. in a drawing room for a piano.
" "These 17 young women - Are pupils
at the Cambridge SchooLof Architectural
and Landscape Design for Women and
they -are all striving hard to meet the
requirements that will launch taem on
their careers as home-makers and land
scape gardeners.' " '
The purpose of the school is to train
students in certain branches of the ar
chitectural design, the theory and prac
tice of landscape ' design with partieu
lar reference to domestic work, and
the combination of the two in the study
of house and garden.
"These girt students : are particularly
encouraged to take up both the study of
the house and the garden as It is felt
they' should be able when they graduate
to duiio. tne nouse complete, lay out the
garden- or yard in accordance with the
style of the house and the wishes, of
th family, and deliver to the-tjlient a
complete domicile, even to the Interior
decoration and suggestions for furnish
ings. - , - : - '
"During the first and a part ' of the
second year, the training is a grounding
in the principles of architectural design.
When this is successfully accomplished
each student . Is allowed to study and "
perfect herself in the particular subject
in which she is most interested - or In
which she has shown the most promise. '
"One of the young ladles taking the
course in architecture f abd c landscape
gardening says that she anticipates a
popular call in the future for the woman
architect, for the reason that when a
house ' is contemplated, . especially -the
small house, the wife and, housekeeper
is usually the one whom It must be built
to suit. and . she thinks that a, woman
will better understand the desires of a
woman In her new home than even
could the most expert man. ;i f j-
"The attic the closets, the pantry,
the china cupboard and many other fea
tures,' she says, 'can be much ; better
planned by a woman who has a woman's
viewpoint for beauty and utility; for
th organisation of a nursery no man
could be expected to see things the same
as would a woman.
" 'A man would put closets where -he
found he had a small space unused for
anything else, but to a woman that la
folly. A woman architect would put .
closets where they would be convenient
and necessary, would not build a bath -room
off a dining room (as I have seen
in some houses), and wbuld not put the
nursery next the living room.
" The chance to build houses and
gardens for the small householder
seems to me especially stttted for women,
particularly those who havs-the do-
