Atlanta, March 16. (I. N. S.) Mrs. Margaret Jackson Hirsch late this after noon was convicted of attempting; verbal blackmail fipon Asa G. Candler, multi millionaire oft drink manufacturer and mayor of Atlanta, for' $50,000 and waa sentenced to serve one year at the state prison farm and to pay a fine of $1000, the extreme penalty. Mrs. Hirsch received the sentence without a tremor and without comment. -Judge Tl. B. Russell, for the defense, served notice of appeal and the court fixed the ball of Mrs. Hirsch at $3000. Mrs. Hirsch was taken back to her cell to await bail. The Jury was out 25 minutes. In sentencing- Mrs. Hirsch, Judge Hill said: , "Blackmail Is a terrible crime, as bad sas highway robbery. The robbery of a man's character or the attempt to rob : nim of his character by extortion of money la as bad morally as the robbery of his money on a public highway, if not classed In the same degree by law. "Many a man would rather face a pistol of a highwayman than exposure , by fraud. "1 do not know what tt do with the woman. She Is not able to work on a public road. A woman of her breeding and past refinement and position is not able to work in this manner. So I am not going to put hr on publlo work. Instead, I am going to place her on the state prison farm at Mllledgevllle." Mrs. Hirsch said tonight that Bhe had not decided whether she would furnish the bond for her freedom pending the . outcome of her appeal. Governor Whitman Wants Third Term New Tork. March 16. CI. N. After shooting through the heart a man j believed to be R. M. Holmes, of Man- teca, Ohio, In a small woods here, a woman, evidently his wife, sent a bullet through her own heart. The bodies were found this evening:. The double tragedy probably took placfl late Friday night. The only article found in their cloth ing that would serve to Identify the two bodies was a postofflce receipt fo. a package sent from Manteca to Mrs. Holmes in San Francisco on February 22, 1916. Both were well dressed. The revolver was found beside the woman's body, which was several feet from the body of the man. It contained two discharged and four undischarged cartridges. In her coat pocket were four more cartridges. The woman Is described as 35 years old, dark, stout, weighing approximately 160 pounds, while the man was 40 years old, five feet nine Inches tall, dark com plexloned and weighed approximately 160. Self determination aa to their political future la proposed for the people of Ireland in a Joint resolution introduced late today by Senator Gallinger of New Hampshire. The action follows the visit of a large delegation of Irish Americana to con gress yesterday. The joint resolution reads: "Resolved, that the application in case of the Irish people of the great principle of self determination as interpreted by the president of the United States In his discussion of the fundamental and in dispensable condition of a lasting peace, will constitute a source of genuine grati fication to the people and government of the United tates, sincerely, solicitous as they are for the harmony and pros perity of the two great peoples. "And be it further resolved, that the two houses of congress concur In the belief that the effect of willingness on the part of the people of the government of Great Britain to permit the ascer tainment of the will of the Irish people by means of a plebiscite of the adult population (men and women) will be viewed as a. precedent of the most pro found Importance by all peoples of dis tinct national character seeking to ac quire in an orderly manner final vindi cation and sanction of their titles of sovereignty."
