THEATRE MONDAY
25 Minute Mid-Day Period of
Cover Two Weeks.
REAfe BENEFIT IS EXPECTED
Under Auspices of Brotherhood
, of .St. Andrew of the Portland
Episcopal Church.
O W to spend 25 minutes to the
beat advantage Is a problem
that has been worked out by
the Brotherhood of St. Andrew
of the Episcopal church In
Portland.
It answer Is: Attend the noon-day
meetings which begin at the Baker
theatre Monday and will continue
through Passion week and Holy week,
with the exception of Palm Sunday.
- These meetings are under the auspices
of the Brotherhood. Beginning at 12 :05
and concluding at 12:30 o'clock, they-will
give busy people an opportunity to step
out of the tiresome routine Into a soul
refreshing atmosphere of prayer and
meditation and to take away with them
some strengthening- thought that will be
of real benefit in the midst of life's
problems.
These meetings are ah annual event,
and have commanded great Interest. In
former years they were limited to Holy
week. The decision to add another week
waa prompted by the presence of the gi
gantic Issues lnv(fhved In the war, so
buddenly emergent that the nation was
almost thrown off its balance, and by
the fact that so many people impressed
by the weight of them are realising as
never before the need of some spiritual
anchorage.
The list of speakers for the Passion
week meetings, which begin Monday.
are: Monday, Rev. C. II. L. Chandler,
Oregon City; Tuesday, Rev. W..R. B.
Turrlll, Astoria ; Wednesday, Rev. E. T.
Simpson, Corvallls ; Thursday, Friday
and Saturday, Rev. E. V. Shayler,

Service flag of ' Friends or Quakers

AT
LENTS WILL ADOPT
UNIQUE SERVICE FLAG
Insignia Is Emblem of Mercy
Used by Quakers as Far Back
as Franco-Prussian War.
Sunday morning, last, the congrega
tion of the Second Friends church, at
Lents, witnessed the ' unveiling of a
service flag. Inasmuch as the Friends,
or Quakers as they are familiarly
known, take no part in war. the unveil
ing of a service flag Is significant. This
flag is different from the ordinary flag,
having for its emblem a red star inter
twined with a black star. In button
form it is worn by members of this sect
all over the world at the present time.
It stands, not for war, but for the
reconstruction work being done by the
young men of this faith in France and
other European countries. The emblem
is older than the Red Cross, having
been recognized by international agree
ment as an emblem of mercy when used
by the English Quakers in the Franco
Prussian war in 1871.
The unveiling of this flag in the
Lents church was in connection with a
fund raising campaign which the mem
bers of this faith are undertaking
throughout the United States. Their
total membership is about 100,000 and
they have set out to raise $500,000 a
year to support the unit which is now
on the field. There are 150 young
American Quakers and 300 from Eng
land who have volunteered their serv
ices, and the expense of maintaining
them is met by their fellow members.
The local church is small, about 80
resident members, but it has set as its
goal the raising of 1800, and has already
secured over $500. The pastor of the
church is Rev. (Miss) Laurana M.
Terrell.
Rose City Church
To Wipe Out Debt

half the total sum was subscribed and
solicitors hope to make a further public
appeal unnecessary by Saturday night.
This church has had a remarkable
growth In the past five years. Its Sun
day school under the leadership of Dr.
J. Earle Else, now enrolls more than 500
pupils, and a campaign is being launched
to bring the church attendance up to the
E00 mark before May 5. $
Rev. T. W. Lane, pastor of Centenary

vice at 7 .30.

The door of opportunity to nerve oar conn try

Stamp. This U the aaost impressive thins about
toe movement which Is being undertaken by the
National War Savings committee. There can be
few people whose circumstances will not permit
them to buy at intervals the 25 cent Thrift
Stamp, and with each purchase gain, step by

each one of which the credit and resources of
the. United States are. pledged to return $5 for

Such a return being produced by the process
of compound interest carries the lesson of thrift
in a practical and convincing way. We earnestly
commend to young and old, and more particu

acquiring the habit of thrift. Many sorrows ara
avoided and much ahppiness is to be gained by
the timely application of the principles of thrift.
