The motive Dower of the Mount Hood consists of twin Diesel engines, which will develop BOO horsepower each. ' They have eight cylinders each, and are 25 feet long. Each weighs 37 tons. Captain K. A. Dent of San Francisco Is to be master- of the Mount Hood. The chief engineer will be E. Perkins. Engineer Doyle will be his assistant. The full crew will number Z6. Alexander Hynd, marine superintend ent of Gaston, Williams & Wlgmore, for whom the. Mount Hood was built, is due today from New York to Inspect the vessel and go on the trial trip prelimin ary to accepting her lor tne owners. Captain F. A. Mlddieton is tne com pany's representative here. He has fol lowed the details of .outfitting , the vessel. STEAMERS HAY BE ' LEFT IDLE Hiah Cost of Operation Seems to Bar Use of Galzeri and Dalles City. The steamers Bailey Gatzert and Dalles City are to remain Idle this sea son unless leased by some company for operation, according to Drake C 0Retlly. "We will have no use for them." he said, "but would entertain a proposition for their lease." The two steamers were operated on the Portland-Upper Columbia run un der the direction of the Regulator line, but were laid up when the line went out of business and the lease on the Alder street dock was given up. The steamers are moored above the South Portland Industrial district The increased coat of operation was responsible for discontinuance of the line. Mr. O'Reilly said. It took over 100 barrels of oil to operate the Bailey Gatzert on a round trip. With the In crease in the cost of the oil to $1.60 a barrel,, it was figured that the addi tional cost to operate the Gatzert on a round trip in fuel alone would be 195, Mr. O'Reilly said. ' Then other things have gone up, particularly wages, he added. WORKMEN INSTALLING MOTORS Alexander Hynd Due From New York to Inspect New, Ship Mt. Hood.
