At a recent meeting of the Port of

application for the dredge Tualatin to

BRITISH DESTROY
2
Former Goeben and Breslau Are
Sunk Near Mouth of the
Dardanelles.
London, Jan. 21. (I. N. S.) Turkey's
navy has practically been wiped out by
the loss of the big cruisers Sultan Zllm
and Mldullu, and the Dally News pre
dicted today that this blow, together
with the British victories on Turkish
soil, will hasten the Ottoman' empire
into making peace.
The Sultan Zlim and the Mldullu were
formerly the German cruisers Goeben
and Breslau, which took refuge in the
Dardanelles at the outbreak of the war.
Two British monitors were sunk in the
naval engagement which took place at
ine mouth or the Dardanelles Sunday
morning. Viscount Broome, a nephew
of the late Lord Kitchener, was in com
mand of one of the monitors and bis
fate is unknown.
The Breslau was sunk and the Goeben
was driven ashore, where she was badly
damaged by bombs dropped by British
airmen.
Turkey'sgSituatlon Serious
. London, Jan. 21. (U. P.) Turkey's
situation In the war has become so seri
ous that she took the desperate chance
of sending out the old Goebel and Bres
lau to fight British patrol vessels, in the
faint hope of returning aft'er sinking a
couple of good-sized ships and Urns
bucking up a declining Turkish morale.
This was the interpretation placed
here on the Dardanelles engagement.
