Carl Mays was the only member of
the erstwhile champion Red Sox who

Surely Start Game
New Tork, Dec. 21. (I. N. S.) Eight
minor leagues out of 20 have announced
they will play next season. They are;
Pacific Coast, American association.
Western league. Southern association,
Texas league, . Eastern league. Blue
Ridge league and Central association.
Those already out of the game are the
Virginia, North Carolina, Dixie, Georgia.
' Alabama and Northern league.
Other, circuit must be reorganised If
they expect to resume operations. This
includes the International and North
western leagues.
Chemistry Team Is Winner
In playing off their challenge basket-

Thomas J. Darmody, president of the
Vernon ball club, has announced the ap
pointment of Bill Esslck aa manager
of the Vernon Tigers for the season of
1917. Esslck will take immediate charge
right after the first of the year. Dar
mody and Esslck will get together and
start building up the hall club for next
season.. . , 1
Esslck has acted as manager of the
Grand Rapids ball club in the Central
league for five years, has won two pen
rants and always had his club up and
going. He pitched for Portland In 1806
and went from there to the big brush.
He is touted as a smart baseball man
with the ability of developing players
and getting good results.'
Esslck will act as business manager
of the Vernon club, aa well aa bench
manager. He will have complete con
trol of the playing end and It will be up
to him to secure the players necessary
to put Vernon back in the Pacific Coast
league pennant fight for the 1918
season.
Darmody Is well pleased with his new
leader. - He has known Essick for
number of years and feels certain that
he has picked the logical man to have
the Tigers In the running next season.
Ed Barrow Is Slated
For Boston Bed Sox
Chicago, Dec. 21. (I. N. R Edward
G. Barrow, president of the International
league. Is slated for a position with the
Boston Red Sox. according to rumors In
circulation here. It Is said a deal is now
pending between . Barrow and Harry
Frasee, president of the Boston dub,
whereby Barrow will take 'over the
management of the club and Vraxee de
vote his time to his theatrical Interests.

wonder why they ever fell for such
a proposition anyway. ;

offer and should It happen that he
was able to put over the crushing

11s. Deo. 21. The annual co-ed track
meet, held in the women's gymnasium
here with the doors closely guarded to
pre rent the entrance ot the male mem
bers ef the student body, proved to be
the most exciting, spirited and suecse
ful event of lis kind ever staged here
by the girl members of the Institution.
The big gymnasium waa crowded with
girls and the numeroua interclass eon
tests were run off amid the greatest
enthusiasm.
The members of the sophomore class
carried off the honors at the meet with
a score of 2 points. The freshmen girls
were second with 15. the Juniors took
points and the seniors, notwithstanding
the yelling and enthusiasm they dis
played under the 'able leadership ot Tell
Leader Doris Bawyer, had to be con
tent with a lonely cipher.
A big feature of the meet waa the
struggle for possession of an Angora
goat, the mascot of the freshman class,
which won out. . The other classes also
were equipped , with mascots Including
a rabbit and a dog.
The edict that had been announced to
the effect that mere man was strictly
barred from viewing the meet waa no
bar to two newspaper men who, equipped
with verbal permission to see the eon

marched boldly to the door, and, tailing
the policewoman 6n duty there that they
had permission to eater, suoceeded in
beholding the acta of the girl athletes,
the active work of the yell leaders and
the wild enthusiasm of the mass ot
femininity for a space of several minutes
until Mrs. aflriam reetey. director of
the meet, hastened to them, expressed
her deep regret that they positively
couldjnot remain, gently but firmly ush
ered them to the door, whence they
found themselves In the cold and frosty
air outside.
Red Baldwin Asking
About His Contract
Red Baldwin, the young Portland
catcher who was drafted Into the na
tional 'army and la now at Camp
Lewis, takes pen In hand and wrltea
to Judge McCredle concerning his
1911 contract. Ha wants to know If
he stUl belongs to the McCredle club.
Red says he la settling down to army
life, that the troops with which he is
assigned will be ready for France
about the time the baseball training
season opens and that he la sure the
great Northwest . Is living up to Ks
reputation so far as rain is concerned.

for the dropping of the Canaries,
The dropping of Spokane mean the
transfer of the Canary players to the
Seattle and the Vancouver teams. Se
attle will likely get Lester Patrick
who In all probability will be named
manager ef the team, and Ran Mo-
Donald, while Vancouver will take
Lloyd Cook. Bob Gange and probably
Leo Cook or Nichols.
