A SERIES of anniversary meetings
of the United Artisans are to be
held throughout the Northwest in
November In celebration of the
twenty-third anniversary of the order,
which was founded In Portland No
vember 4, 1894. The order has been
original In many . ways and has led
the fraternal world In several success
ful Innovations In fraternal life pro
tection. It was established by busi
ness men of Portland with a view to
furnishing social enjoyment and fra
ternal protection on a business basis.
It was first to establish a heavy re
serve at Its very start, and the first
to establish a Juvenile department.
At the National Fraternal congress
In 1915, when that body was tentative
ly discussing the proposition. If. S.
Hudson, master Artisanof the order,
electrified the asuemblage by Inform'

started along that unbiased path' and
had some Interesting facts and expe
riences to submit. The 1'nlted Arti

of interest for Its funds, but enabling
manufacturing establishments to em
ploy more men. Une manufacturing
Institution borrowed $100,000 at one
time; another $40,000, and recently a
concern In Portland has been enabled
to employ 40 more men as a result of
securing a loan from the United Ar
tlsans. The order has headquarters
In the Reck building at Broadway and
Oak street, and its Invested funds
amount to over $1,250,000 to secure
the protection afforded to 20,000 mem
bers In seven different states. In
Portland It Is taking Into its 18 dif
ferent local assemblies over 250 mem
bers a month. 11. 8. Hudson, supreme
mattcr Artisan, and C. L,. McKenna,
supreme secretary, who have been with
the order since Its inception, will
visit the principal local assemblies,
beginning November 6. at Pendleton.
At each place they will receive classes
of candidates and sheaves of applica
tions and will endeavor to pass tha
total of 24,000 members as a memento
of tha twenty-third anniversary of al
ways forward and never a step back
ward career of the order.
The following Is the Itinerary of tha
two supreme officers.: Walla Walla,
November 7; Colfax, November 9; Oar
field. November 13'; Pullman, Novem
ber 15; Moscow. Idaho, November 18;
ftpokane, November 19; North Yakima,
November 24; Heattle, November 2o
and 27; Hotulam, November 28; Ta
coitia, November 29; Aberdeen, No
vember 30.
Will Kit Hew JUtusls. The mem
bers of Portland lodge No. 1, A. O. V.
W.. are looking forward to the presen
tation of the new ritual on next Fri
day nlaht at K. of P. hall with much
Interest. The computation of the
ritual was done by I. C. Herrln. grand
master, and It will be presented hv a
team and set of officers under Dr. I.
N. Palmer, grand physician. On Sat
urday night the new Sheik degree will
be presented by Pyramid Oasis. A. O.
1'. W. It has been brought up to date
by Grand Master Herrln. This latter
festivity will mark the forty-njnth
anniversary of the A. C). U. W. The
Pyramid Oasts is only reached once a
year, but It Is lots of fun while the
caravan stops there.
Janio Moose Will Cslssrate, Tha
fourth anniversaty of the establish
ment of the Junior Order of Mo.ose 1
will be marked by a Joint celebration
by both the Junior lodge and Portland
lodge, Ioyal Order of Moose. The
juniors number about 100 members
and as their senior members reach the
age of 21 are accepted Into the I O,
M. branch wherever ttiey reside. While
this keeps the ranks of the Juniors
depleted, it la an increasing feeder"
to the senior lodge. The lessons taught
the boys are wholesome, ajid fit them
the betttr to be men among men and
true to tiie highest principles of moral
ity and patriotism. Several of the
former Junior members in Portland,
are with the colors and the personnel
of the boys is high.
Xnvestad Aaothar $1000. Portland
1'nlon Degree camp, the accident and
alck benefit organization of the W. O
W. of this city, has Invested another
$100 In liberty bonds -from its sur
" plus of over $7000. This organization
' has been In operation in this city for
nearly 20 years and has 1050 members
It has recently removed Its business
office from the I.umbermens bank
building to the W. O. W. temple, 128
Eleventh street, "and has fitted up
comfortable quarters In the reception
room.
Will Tour Oregon. Grand Chancel
lor Leslie E. Crouch Is endeavoring to
make arrangements to have C. S. Davis
of Denver, Colo., supreme vice chan
rellor of the Knights of Pythias, tour
Oregon and visit a number of district
K. of P. conventions. Mr. Davis la an
orator of great ability, and made the
acquaintance of many Oregon knights
when he attended the supreme con
vention in Portland In 1916. When
tha proposed tour Is arranged Grand
Chancellor Crouch will accompany the
party over the state.

Samaritan, will Confer Degrees.
Samaritan lodge No. 2, I. O. O. F., will
attend in body at the meeting of
Montavllla lodge Wednesday night, and
the celebrated degree team of Samari
tan, under direction of Kerwin J.
Ndlan, will confer the third degree. A
large number of visitors from other
lodges in the city are expected to
avail themselves of the opportunity to
witness the presentation of this degree
In a creditable manner and in - con
formity with the ritual and the tradi
tions of the order.
Legion Will Give Dacca. The
Women of Mboseheart Legion will
give a dance and card party at Moose
hall. Royal building, Tuesday night,
and will have prizes and the best of
music. The legion is a new organiza
tion in Portland, but has already made
a success of several social affairs, and
is attracting to its ranks the wives
and daughters of members of the
Loyal Order of Moose.
Bad Kan Will Welcome Strangars.
The social and card party to be given
by Willamette tribe. Improved Order
of Red Men at Eagles' hall. Third and
Madison streets, Monday night, is open
to members, families and friends, and
the hospitality extended will be hearty
and courteous. It will be a good place
to get acquainted with some good
f raternallsts and patriotic Americana.
Boweaa Circle Monday Afternoon.
Rowena circle of Ivanhoe Homestead,
Brotherhood of American Yeomen, will
hold Its next meeting at the home of
Mrs. Margaret Todd, 1220 Boise street,
Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Take

his sensational flight at Dubuque.
As Beachey's "plane circled and cir
cled and at length swooped down

tained excitement, broke through the
cheering . throng of spectators, dodged
policemen. Jumped the ropes and
reached Beachey; He had to shake
the flyer's hand and tell him that
he, too, was going to fly some day.
A group of policemen made a rush
for-the boy. "Leave him alone," the
airman said. "that, kid has nerve and
that Is what makes an aviator."
